DAVIS, Calif. - Seniors Spencer Galli and Morgan Olson-Fabbro and junior Ido Goldschmidt each netted two goals, as 10th-ranked UC Davis dispatched Santa Clara, 11-5, in a Western Water Polo Association men's game at Schaal Aquatics Center Saturday afternoon.
The Aggies improve to 11-5 overall and remain unbeaten in conference at 3-0. The Broncos move to 4-8 for the year and 0-2 in WWPA play.
Goldschmidt converted an assist from Cory Laidig in the first quarter, then converted a five-meter penalty opportunity to start the second. Galli hit his first goal on a counterattack during UC Davis' run of five unanswered in the first half, then netted his second on a Laidig assist with 5:28 to go in the third. Olson-Fabbro scored both of his goals in the second half.
The Aggies started slowly surrendering the game's first goal after SCU sophomore Mac Carey scored a power-play goal just 95 seconds into the contest. The Broncos managed four steals and an Emil Huebner save against UC Davis before Goldschmidt ended the scoring drought at 3:02. That began a run of five straight for the Aggies through the 4:31 mark of the second.
UC Davis led by a 6-2 margin at halftime, then extended its lead to 8-2 after goals by Olson-Fabbro and Galli early in the third. SCU junior Ryan Werner scored all three of his game-high goals in the second half, but the Aggies maintained at least a five-goal margin throughout.
UC Davis goalie R.J. Quigley posted eight saves against the five goals in front of the cage. Huebner had four stops and five steals in protecting the Bronco net.
The Aggies return to action with continued WWPA play against Concordia on Sunday. First sprint is noon.
