Sept. 27, 2016 Results and live scoring
WOLCUTT, Colo. - Freshman Yoonhee Kim fired a 2-under 70 while senior Paige Lee carded a 72 as the duo turned in solid performances as the UC Davis women's golf team shaved 10 shots off its opening-round score during the second round of play on Tuesday at the Golfweek Conference Challenge.
The Aggies shot a strong team score of 8-over 296 on Tuesday for a significant improvement over Monday. It helped them move into a three-way tie for 11th at 26 over with TCU and Idaho. Coastal Carolina (+24), which is in 10th, is just two shots in front on a crowded leaderboard that has only eight shots separating fifth through 13th places.
Kim's round brought her score down to 5 over and jumped her 33 places into a tie for 28th while Lee is just 2 over and tied for 17th. Sophomore Samantha Hutchison shot 75 and is 11 over after two rounds, freshman Rei Nakatani had an 89 and is 10 over, and freshman Christine Danielsson is 13 over after matching Nakatani's score.
"We got off to a much better start today," said head coach Anna Temple. "We put ourselves in position to score and we want to carry that forward into tomorrow's round. Yoonhee came back with a great round and Paige had another solid round. We are excited to get back out for the third round and continue to learn and develop from the things we did well today."
Kim keyed her day by going 1 under on both sides of the 6,261-yard Fazio Course at Red Sky Golf Club. She birdied the par-4 13th and then added two more on the par5 15th and par-3 17th holes to help balance a pair of bogeys. Kim birdied a pair of holes on her back nine to help her shoot 1 under over that stretch.
Lee, who had a 74 on Monday, was 2 over at her turn but then had a great back nine that featured birdies on the par-4 3rd hole and the par-5 5th. She had pars on the remaining seven holes and stayed in the top 20.
Hutchison had a nice five-shot improvement from her first round by playing her opening nine holes to par thanks to a birdie on No. 13 and then another on the par-5 18th. Nakatani was 4 over at her turn but just 3 over on the back while Danielsson turned in the same 9-hole totals on both sides as Nakatani.
San Diego State (-9) is the only team under par through 36 holes and holds a commanding 13-shot lead over Pepperdine. The Aztecs' Natalie Vivaldi is 5 under and has a two-shot lead among individuals.
The tournament, which brings together 18 teams from 18 different conferences, concludes on Wednesday.
