Sept. 18, 2016 DAVIS, Calif. - Junior Morgan Olson-Fabbro and sophomore Riley Venne each scored hat tricks while junior goalkeeper Spencer Creed had 13 saves and two steals, leading No. 12 UC Davis to a 9-5 win over No. 17 San Jose State in the final game of the Aggie Roundup men's collegiate water polo tournament at Schaal Aquatics Center Sunday. The Aggies split their final day of the tourney, with a tough 13-7 loss to No. 3 California earlier in the day.
UC Davis improves to 7-2 for the year. Olson-Fabbro scored two of his goals as part of a run of three unanswered in the first quarter that erased the Spartans' initial 1-0 lead. Venne completed a power play to end the first quarter then scored on even strength with 2:13 in the second to help the Aggies forge a 6-2 halftime lead. Sophomore Davor Koret had two second-half goals for the Spartans, but the Aggies stayed in front for the remainder of the game. Junior
Cory Laidig had a goal and an assist in the final 10 minutes of play to pace UC Davis offensively. However, it was the Aggie defense and the cage protection of Creed that held SJSU to just 5-for-27 shooting. In the Aggies' morning contest with the Golden Bears, Team USA alumnus Luca Cupido scored four goals for the visitors, two of which gave Cal a 2-0 start. Sophomore
Ido Goldschmidt put UC Davis on the board on the next possession while Laidig assisted senior
Tennyson May with 1:51 left in the first to keep the Aggies within a single goal. Cupido assisted two goals in a 4-1 run in the second that put Cal back on top by a 7-3 margin. Goldschmidt struck again for his team-leading second goal with a minute left before halftime, pulling the Aggies to within a 7-4 deficit by the break. UC Davis again cut the margin to three when redshirt freshman found sophomore
Marcus Anderson for a 6-on-5 goal with 2:23 left in the third. But the Golden Bears answered after the next restart to bring the score to 9-5 heading into the fourth. The Aggies could not approach by fewer than five goals the rest of the way. Both goalies posted big save numbers in the Cal-UC Davis game. Creed had 13 stops with a steal while Golden Bear senior Lazar Andric matched that save total to go with seven goals against and two steals. UC Davis returns to action at the Mountain Pacific Invitational, formerly known as the NorCal Invitational, held jointly at Cal's Spieker Aquatics Complex and Walnut Creek's Northgate High School. The Aggies are pooled with Long Beach State, USC and Santa Clara in the three-day event that begins on Friday. 2016 AGGIE ROUNDUP, DAY 3
