BOISE, Idaho - Freshman Lauren Matias posted 22 kills and hit .405 while redshirt freshman Heather Reed tallied 25 digs as UC Davis upset 17th-ranked Santa Clara in four sets, 25-21, 25-16, 19-25 and 25-20, to close out the Boise State Invitational women's volleyball tournament at Bronco Gym.
The Aggies, now 7-6 on the year, swept Portland State by scores of 25-16, 25-17, 25-20 earlier in Saturday's session.
Santa Clara was ranked 13th in the Rich Kern RPI rankings and 17th in the AVCA Coaches Top 25 poll on Monday. This marks the highest ranked team that UC Davis has defeated since the program's five-set upset of then-No. 8 Hawai'i back on October 26, 2013.
Matias and sophomore Lauren Jackson, who hit 9-for-14 with just two errors for .500 clip, made the all-tournament team. Matias recorded 38 kills for the weekend, Jackson hit at a rate of .318 for the tournament. Sophomore Brianna Karsseboom added another 15 kills and a .281 success rate in the afternoon upset over the Broncos. Yet another sophomore, Emily Allen, had 11 kills against SCU after delivering 13 with just three errors in the morning sweep over the Vikings.
UC Davis stayed a step ahead of the Broncos throughout the first set, breaking away from an 18-18 tie with a run of five unanswered. Then in the second set, Jackson and Karsseboom provided two kills each in a 9-2 run that erased an initial 4-1 start. The Broncos closed to within five at 15-10 after consecutive blocks but the Aggies answered with seven of the next eight to climb ahead by a 22-12 margin. Matias had five kills in the second frame to help UC Davis to a 2-0 match lead.
The two teams battled closely early in the third before a pair of hitting miscues allowed SCU to pull to an 18-15 edge. Hailey Lindberg then put down a kill and two blocks to extend the margin to 23-18. Sabrina Clayton scored the set-winner to prevent an Aggie sweep. However, UC Davis reclaimed the momentum in the match, with Karsseboom and Matias sparking a 9-5 start to the fourth. The Broncos closed to within two at 12-10 and 15-13 but never could equalize: the young Aggie hitters continued to pound away, totaling 19 kills in the fourth to complete their upset.
In all, UC Davis hit .273 against Santa Clara, besting the previous best of .272 set against Portland State just hours earlier. The Aggies led for almost the entirety of all three frames. The net defense totaled seven blocks in the first set to hold the Vikings to just five kills and a minus-.167 average in the opener. Then the offense turned it on in the second set, with Allen's 5-for-6 hitting pacing 18 total kills and a .467 average in the second.
In the third, PSU's Jenna Mullen exploded for six kills on nine swings and the Vikings tallied three blocks. However, Allen and sophomore middle blocker Kelechi Ohiri sparked the Aggies to a 20-14 lead, and never looked back. A Viking hitting error delivered UC Davis the 25th win and the sweep.
UC Davis completes a 3-1 week that also included a Causeway Classic win over archrival Sacramento State on Tuesday. The BSU Invite closes out the preseason, with the Aggies opening Big West Conference play against Long Beach State on Thursday night.
