BOISE, Idaho - UC Davis totaled 11 team blocks and hit a solid .216 to claim the third set, but ultimately fell in four by scores of 25-12, 25-21, 22-25, 25-23 against the host Broncos at the Boise State Invitational women's volleyball tournament Friday night at Bronco Gym.
The Aggies move to 5-6 for the year. The Broncos improve to 7-4 overall.
True freshman Jackie Graves had six block assists while redshirt freshman Anna Donald added another five. Sophomore outside hitter Emily Allen led UC Davis offensively with 11 kills on 44 attempts. Libero Heather Reed and setter Maddie Merlino paced the floor defense with 14 and 13 digs, respectively.
BSU had four players with double-digit offense, led by Sierra Nobley and he 15 kills. Middle blockers Kaitlyn Oliver and Maddy O'Donnell had 12 kills each, combining for a .457 average on 44 total swings. Junior Maddie Osburn posted a match-high 21 digs.
The Aggies struggled to just eight kills and a minus-.065 average in their first-set loss and trailed wire to wire in the second to slip behind by a 2-0 match score at the break. Sophomore Lauren Jackson brought UC Davis to within a 14-13 deficit with her kill midway through the second frame, but a pair of hitting errors pushed the Broncos up by 18-14. Sophomore Brianna Karsseboom also closed the gap with her ace at 18-16, but that was the closest the Aggies came to equalizing. Oliver had back-to-back stuffs down the stretch to close out the Set 2 victory.
UC Davis slipped into an 8-3 hole to start the third and later trailed by a 10-7 margin before Donald, Jackson and freshman Lauren Matias sparked an 8-2 run that gave the Aggies their first lead of the match at 14-13. Boise State came back to tie the frame four times but could not regain the lead. Allen scored two kills in a run of four answered that set the board to 23-19 in UC Davis' favor. Karsseboom established set point with her kill, then a Bronco hit sailed long for the 25th point.
The Aggies and Broncos traded leads to a 9-9 tie in the fourth before two O'Donnell kills and an Emily Sullivan ace made it 12-9 in BSU's favor. UC Davis put down three blocks while Donald had two kills after that point, but could not erase the deficit the rest of the way. The Broncos had 15 kills, including five by Sierra Nobley, and 18 digs for the fourth set to complete the win.
UC Davis hit .140 as a team, ending a streak of three matches with at least a .200 success rate. The Aggies resume the Boise Invite with Saturday matches against Portland State (8:30 a.m.) and Santa Clara (1:30 p.m.).Â
