DAVIS, Calif. - Sophomore Marcus Anderson scored his third hat trick of the year while junior Cory Laidig and sophomore Ido Goldschmidt each added two goals, helping No. 13 UC Davis to a 13-7 win over No. 18 San Jose State in a home-opening men's water polo game at Schaal Aquatics Center Saturday afternoon.
The Aggies improve to 4-1 for the year. The Spartans even their record to 1-1. Junior
Spencer Creed protected the UC Davis cage with 11 saves, including five stops in the team's 4-0 first quarter. Sophomore

Tennyson May and Laidig each converted 6-on-5 chances in the opener to propel the early start. Freshman

Nick Coufal also had power-play goals in the second half to forge an 8-3 halftime lead. Only Goldschmidt and SJSU sophomore Davor Koret broke the seal on the cage in the second half to keep the Aggies up by five heading into the finale. The Spartans pulled to within a four-goal, 11-7 deficit after sophomore Cade Baldridge drew a five-meter foul with five minutes to go. Freshman Ivan Stefanovic hit the penalty shot for that seventh goal. However, that was the last of the San Jose scoring for the remainder. Riley Venne scored insurance goals. UC Davis shot 13-for-29 for the contest while San Jose State struggled to just 7-for-28. Each team had eight power-play chances, with the Aggies converting five to the Spartans' two. UC Davis remains at home to host the three-day Aggie Rundown tournament from Sept. 16-18. Friday's portion consists of one neutral-site game. The Aggies begin their play at 1:40 p.m. on Day 2 against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.
