SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - Alexis Carney's sixth-inning RBI single plated Brianna Warner in the first of two games played at Bob Janssen Field during Saturday's Big West Conference doubleheader, but UC Davis was unable to negate Cal Poly's three-run fifth inning, which allowed the Mustangs to defeat the Aggies by a 5-1 score. By winning the second game of the day, 6-0, CP clinched a weekend series against the Aggies on its home diamond for the first time since the 2008 season.
UC Davis will enter Sunday's series finale with a 14-29 overall and 3-11 conference record while Cal Poly improves to 23-20 and 6-8.
After Warner reached base on a single through the middle, which took place during the first game in the top of the sixth, the junior centerfielder advanced to second base on a fielder's choice moments later during Kaila Olson's at bat. Two batters after successfully reaching base, Warner tapped home plate when Alexis Carney turned on a 2-0 pitch and hit a single of her own up the middle.
Of the Aggies' five hits, three were recorded during that frame as Megan Salazar opened action with a leadoff single. Megan Bradbury, who hit a single to left field in the fifth, and Alicia Paine, who hit a single to center in the seventh, were the other UC Davis players who finished with a hit.
Even though the Aggies faced Sierra Hyland, Cal Poly's top pitcher who holds a conference-low ERA in the weekend's opening game, they remained within striking distance for most of the afternoon after the Mustangs scored once in the first inning and again in the second.
But it was CP's three-run fifth that created a deficit too big for UC Davis to overcome.
Three singles and a passed ball allowed the Mustangs to score their first two runs; a two-out single from Makenna Young pushed Cal Poly's third run home, and set the stage for a dramatic play at the plate.
Once Young's single hit the grass in left field, Breana West scored from third, and her teammate, Ashley Torino, tried to accomplish the same thing once she received the go-ahead signal from her coach after rounding third. Instead of just advancing one base and remaining on third, Torino (and her coaches) decided to test Taylor Peters' arm -- a decision everyone in green and gold regretted once she threw home because Torino ended up recording the final out of the frame at the plate.
In game two, UC Davis was held to two hits: a single from Salazar that split Cal Poly's shortstop and third baseman in the top of the third inning, and a one-out single to left from Ashley Lotoszynski in the seventh. As was the case in the previous games, runs scored by the Mustangs in the latter innings helped them pull away from the Aggies and collect the win.
Cal Poly scored twice in the second inning, but it was a tremendous throw from Peters to short, and a textbook cutoff Lotoszynski to Carney at home, that prevented the Mustangs from taking an early 3-0 lead. This time, it was Betsy Colburn who recorded the second out after failing to score from first.
After allowing another run in the following inning, UC Davis' deficit doubled to the game's final margin when CP pulled away by scoring twice in the fifth, and once again in the sixth.
