SALT LAKE CITY - Senior Stephanie Stamates scored a 9.875 on floor exercise and a 9.775 on balance beam, leading a trio of UC Davis competitors and wrapping up one of the finest careers in program history, to highlight Aggie action at the NCAA Salt Lake City Regional at Utah's Huntsman Center.
Stamates' floor score was good for a tie for seventh in the meet while her beam performance placed her in a seven-way tie for 20th place.
The 9.875 on floor represented the school-record 56th score of 9.800 or better for the San Ramon Valley High School and California Gymnastics Academy alumna. Stamates entered the meet ranked eighth regionally on floor and tied for sixth on balance beam.
UC Davis moved through the meet as part of Utah State's rotation, with the exception of Alexis Brown, who competed on beam after Illinois' turn. Junior Katy Nogaki was the first Aggie to compete, scoring in a 34th-place 9.675 on vault. Brown suffered a break in each of her beam and bars routines. A fall on beam resulted in a 9.100 while execution errors late in the routine saw her bars score dip to 9.325.
Nogaki ranked 23rd in the West on vault, while Brown entered the meet in ties for 26th on bars and 17th on beam among her region peers. This was the third straight trip to regionals for Nogaki and the second for Stamates, each of whom appeared as part of the Aggies' team qualification in 2014. Brown made her first appearance in the NCAA postseason.
Host Utah won the meet with a 197.125 and UCLA finished second at 196.375 to earn advancing tickets to the national meet in Texas. Washington placed third at 195.825, with Illinois (195.350), Utah State (195.025) and Southern Utah (194.950) composing the remaining field. SUU's Danielle Ramirez (39.400) and Washington's Allison Northey (39.275) each captured the regional's at-large all-around berths to the NCAA Finals. Illinois' Lizzy Leduc tied for the regional title on floor to move on to the national meet.
