April 17, 2016 DAVIS, Calif. - Senior Allyson Hansen and sophomore Greta Kohlmoos each scored hat tricks to lead No. 12 UC Davis to an 18-1 victory over Cal State Monterey Bay in the women's water polo team's season home finale at Schaal Aquatics Center Sunday afternoon.
The Aggies improve to 17-11 for the year. The Otters fall to 5-24.
Sunday's contest marked the final career home game for seven seniors: Hansen, defender Hailey Wright, goalkeeper Haley Cameron, center Courtney Weddle, utility Ariel Arcidiacono, goalkeeper Olivia Husted and utility Bryn Lutz.
Husted started the contest, tallying eight total saves with no goals in the first half. Junior Avery Dotterer replaced her in the third, notching one save on the two shots she faced, then redshirt freshman Katy Heatherton nearly tripled her career total with five stops in her fourth-quarter appearance.
Offensively, sophomore Paige Virgil, freshman Marcela Portales and sophomore Jill Bushman each added two goals. Weddle, Lutz, Hannah Harvey, Carla Tocchini, Daniela Hernandez and Emily Perry also scored a goal apiece.
The Aggies opened the game with 11 unanswered goals before Marisa Lovos put the Otters on the board with her 6-on-5 conversion at the 3:35 mark in the third. UC Davis led 4-0 at the end of the first quarter and 7-0 by halftime. Hansen netted back-to-back to extend the margin to 11 before CSUMB spoiled the shutout. The Aggies held a 13-1 edge through three quarters before tacking on another five in the fourth.
The one goal allowed is the fewest in almost exactly one year: UC Davis beat Sonoma State by a 10-1 final on April 18, 2015. The last Aggie shutout was a 13-0 victory over UC Santa Cruz in 2006.
UC Davis takes a week off before competing at the Big West Conference Championship at UC Santa Barbara from April 29-May 1.
