By swiping another two bags throughout Saturday's doubleheader at Cal State Fullerton, Brianna Warner is a perfect 34-34 this season, and will most likely remain the Big West's No. 1 base stealer for another week.

Vela shines in Saturday's doubleheader

FULLERTON, Calif. - UC Davis starting pitcher Justine Vela gave up only two hits and one run throughout her 4.2 innings in the circle during the first game of Saturday's Big West Conference doubleheader at Anderson Family Field, and UC Davis jumped out to a 1-0 lead when Taiya McInnes punched a single through the right side of the field in the top of the first inning, which allowed Brianna Warner to score. As was the case the previous day, Cal State Fullerton turned the Aggies' advantage into a 2-1 lead of its own before pulling away in the sixth inning, by scoring another three runs on one swing, to defeat the UC Davis, 5-1.

In the series finale, it was Cal State Fullerton that held a 1-0 lead after the first inning until UC Davis battled back to tie the score at 1-1 entering the bottom of the second. The Aggies scored another run in the top of the third; unfortunately, the Titans plated two runs of their own in the bottom of the second, and another three in the third to preserve its undefeated league record by virtue of its 8-2 victory.

UC Davis will now return home for its next Big West series, versus UC Riverside, with a 14-22 overall and 3-6 league record. Cal State Fullerton will continue its season with records of 34-10 and 9-0.

In game one, Warner kicked off ESPN3's broadcast of Saturday's doubleheader by reaching on a bunt single back to the pitcher. After she stole her 33rd base, in as many attempts, Lotoszynski joined her on base by drawing a two-out single.

With Warner's speed, Cal State Fullerton had zero chance to catch the Aggies' centerfielder at the plate once McInnes' single bounced through the dirt into right field.

Even though she allowed the Titans to score a run in the third, Vela only gave up two hits, and retired 12 of the first 16 CSF batters throughout her stint in the circle.

Cal State Fullerton broke a 1-1 tie by scoring one run in its half of the fifth, but it was Melissa Sechrest's three-run homer in the sixth that extended its lead to a larger margin.

In addition to opening the game with a single, Warner singled to second base in the second inning to post her team-high second hit of the afternoon.

As a team, the Aggies recorded four hits compared to Cal State Fullerton's six in a game that featured strong pitching efforts from both team's starter. The ultimate difference was Sechrest's swing in the sixth, which turned an entertaining pitchers' duel, and competitive matchup, into a four-run Titan victory.

After winning the series by taking the first game of the day, CSF struck first in the bottom of the first inning, but quickly saw its early lead disappear when Ashley Lotoszynski scored on a Titan error in the top of the second.

UC Davis scored another run when Warner touched the plate on a single up the middle from Alexis Carney the following inning. After watching Christina Guidry lead off the frame with a double to left center, then advance another 60 feet on a wild pitch, Warner reached safely on a fielder's choice when her teammate was thrown out at home.

Before scoring UC Davis' second run in as many innings, Warner stole second during Taylor Peters' at bat. The top base stealer in the conference is now 14 bags shy of setting a new Big West record for the most bases stolen in a single season - a mark that is currently held (but not for long at her current pace) by UC Riverside's Dionne Anderson.

By scoring six of its eight runs throughout the first three innings, and plating as least one Titan in every inning but one, Cal State Fullerton created a deficit that UC Davis was unable to erase throughout the rest of the game, maintained its position atop the Big West standings and ended the weekend with a series sweep.

Coincidentally, UC Riverside is the next league opponent that the Aggies will face; softball's upcoming three-game series against the Highlander will begin at La Rue Field on Saturday, April 23. First pitch for that day's doubleheader is slated for 1 p.m.
