Cameron leads Aggies to 6-4 upset win

April 16, 2016

DAVIS, Calif. - Senior goalkeeper Haley Cameron tallied 17 saves while junior Hannah Harvey scored the go-ahead goal and draw a key five-meter foul in the final minute, sealing a 6-4 upset for No. 12 UC Davis past No. 5 UC Irvine in Big West Conference women's water polo action in front of a Picnic Day crowd Saturday afternoon.

The Aggies improve to 16-11 for the year and finish the conference season with a 2-3 mark. The Anteaters slip to 16-10 overall and 3-2 in Big West play.

Six UC Davis players scored one goal apiece in the defensive battle. Freshman Annie Kutt delivered a power-play goal in the first; sophomore Greta Kohlmoos, junior Bryn Lutz and McKenna Hauss each netted a goal in the second; Harvey notched the game-winner with 3:07 in the fourth, then junior Carla Tocchini converted the penalty shot after Harvey was fouled in the final seconds.

For UCI, goalkeeper Annika Nelson recorded 10 blocks while Destene Albers, Hanna Lancaster, Corinna Toledo and Gabby Pierandozzi each tallied a goal.

Kutt drew first blood in the game with her exclusion goal with 6:22 in the first. The Aggies held onto that lead for more than four minutes, with Cameron coming up with three stops in that run, before Albers scored from set to beat the shot clock with 1:49 to go. UC Davis led 1-1 at the end of the frame, then fell behind on Lancaster's 6-on-5 conversion early in the second. However, the Aggies swiftly answered on the next possession, with senior Courtney Weddle feeding Kohlmoos at two meters for the equalizer at 5:36.

This pattern repeated later in the second: Toledo lifted UCI to another lead at the 3:16 mark, only to have Lutz respond with her perimeter goal after the next restart. Cameron posted her fourth save on a key 5-on-6 stand with a minute to go on the half, then the Aggies regained the lead in dramatic fashion. Hauss fired a shot that Nelson knocked away. However, the current of the water carried the loose ball just past the frame of the cage. The Aggies went to the break with that 4-3 advantage.

Neither team managed a goal in the third on 14 combined shooting attempts. Cameron had four saves in that frame, including one against Mary Brooks on a penalty shot at the six-minute mark. Kohlmoos and Kutt also helped Cameron with field blocks on the defensive end. Finally, Pierandozzi ended the 13-minute scoreless drought with her skip shot with 4:45 left in the fourth, tying the contest for a fourth time.

With three and a half minutes left, senior Allyson Hansen drew an exclusion at two meters to provide UC Davis with another 6-on-5 chance. The Aggies called timeout, then completed the power play after the break. Lutz found Harvey with a shooting lane at the one spot, and Harvey buried the shot with 3:07 on the clock.

Cameron's final save gave UC Davis possession with 1:13 remaining in regulation. Hansen fired a backhanded shot that Nelson deflected for her 10th block. The ball caromed toward the right corner of the course, sending two Anteater players and Tocchini into a scramble to win possession. Tocchini won the race, and the Aggies could continue their clock-management mode for nearly another full shot clock.

UC Davis called another timeout, then opted to begin the ensuing possession in its own defensive end. Senior defender Hailey Wright passed upfield to Harvey, who went straight to the cage for an apparent counterattack. She was fouled on the way by Mackenzie Milham, which sent Tocchini to the five-meter line for a penalty shot. Tocchini connected, giving the Aggies a two-goal lead with mere seconds remaining.

Saturday's win marks the second straight year that UC Davis has won the annual conference matchup against UCI. The `Eaters had won the first six, including three by a single goal. It also represents the fourth meeting between the two teams in 2016, evening the series at 2-2 for the season.

The Aggies host Cal State Monterey Bay for their Senior Day home finale at noon on Sunday. The team will honor seniors Hansen, Cameron, Wright, Lutz, Weddle, goalkeeper Olivia Husted, and utility Ariel Arcidiacono.
