FULLERTON, Calif. - After allowing Cal State Fullerton to score the first run of Friday's Big West series opener at Anderson Family Field in the first inning, UC Davis responded by tying the score at 1-1 when the Aggies returned to the plate in the following inning. However, a four-run sixth inning helped the host Titans pull away from the Aggies and record a 6-1 win.
UC Davis will enter Saturday's ESPN3 broadcast with a 14-20 overall and 3-4 Big West record while Cal State Fullerton improves to 32-10 and 7-0.
ESPN3 will broadcast Saturday's doubleheader online, starting at 12 p.m. After the first game concludes, a 30-minute break will take place before first pitch of the series' finale.
Cal State Fullerton took advantage of a first-inning error to take an early 1-0 lead heading into the top of the second inning. It was then when the Aggies rebounded by scoring a run of their own, tying the score in the process.
With two outs already recorded, Ashley Lotoszynski hit a single that split CSF's third baseman and shortstop to reach base. After the Titans committed the first of their two errors during Kaila Olsen's inaugural at bat, which allowed Lotoszynski to reach scoring position, Taiya McInnes loaded the bases by singling to center field.
In her three plate appearances, McInnes recorded a hit on each occasion and was responsible for half of her team's total.
Brianna Warner drove in the Aggies' first run with a single to left, which would have been two RBI had Titan left fielder Samantha Vandiver recorded the final out at the plate shortly thereafter.
After Olsen rounded third on Warner's single, the Aggies decided to challenge Vandiver and force her to make the perfect throw to prevent one of the team's fastest runners from scoring. A perfect throw was made, which reached home just a split second before Olsen did, recording the third out in the process with five innings still remaining, and the score tied at one apiece.
Cal State Fullerton broke that tie in the fourth when Courtney Rodriguez, who reached base on a leadoff single, scored on a two-out triple from Delynn Rippy. Even though the Titans led by one entering the fifth, it was four at bats that took place in their half of the sixth, all within a brief timespan, that became the ultimate difference in Friday's game.
Sandwiched between two singles was a wild pitch; a double and a two-run home run took place during CSF's next two at bats. On those four hits, the Titans scored four runs, and turned a 2-1 lead into the game's final score.
