Aggie centers net Big West win at CSUN

April 10, 2016

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - Senior Allyson Hansen and sophomore Greta Kohlmoos each scored three goals to lift No. 9 UC Davis from a 6-4 halftime deficit to a 10-9 win over No. 25 CSUN in Big West Conference women's water polo action at Matador Pool Sunday afternoon.

The Aggies improve to 15-11 for the year and pick up their first league win to move to 1-3. The Matadors slip to 10-18 overall and remain winless in Big West play at 0-4.

Senior Hailey Wright, junior Carla Tocchini, junior Bryn Lutz and sophomore Paige Virgil also scored goals for UC Davis. Wright boosted the Aggies to a 3-1 start, first scoring on a power play on the first possession, then drawing a five-meter foul that resulted in Tocchini's penalty shot at the 2:35 mark. Hansen also scored in that run, finishing a power play with 5:44 on the clock.

However, CSUN responded with three unanswered to pull to a 4-3 lead in the second. Lutz ended the run with a 6-on-5 conversion with 3:19 to go but UC Davis trailed by a two-goal margin at the halftime break. Sophomore Madeleine Sanchez hit two goals late in the first while junior McKenzie Pollei hit all three second-half tallies for the Matadors.

Hansen netted back-to-back goals in the first three minutes the third, scoring on an exclusion then again on a counterattack to tie the contest at 6-6. Sanchez completed her hat trick to briefly restore the lead for CSUN but Kohlmoos equalized after the next restart to forge the game's fifth tie.

The Aggies scored three unanswered in the fourth to take a 10-7 lead, their largest of the game. Kohlmoos hit from two meters, Virgil scored her season's first goal on a penalty shot, then Kohlmoos struck again from set with 3:11 to go.

UC Davis finishes the regular season with a Picnic Day weekend homestand. The Aggies host UC Irvine for their Big West Conference finale on Saturday, then hosts Cal State Monterey Bay for a Senior Day matchup on Sunday. Both contests begin at noon at Schaal Aquatics Center.
