Doherty named first team, four Aggies honored

March 7, 2016

DAVIS, Calif. -- UC Davis senior center Alyson Doherty was named to the All-Big West first team, headlining a group of four Aggies honored by the league's coaches as the Big West Conference honor roll was announced on Monday morning during the conference's annual pre-tournament call.

Already a two-time All-Big West second team selection, and an all-freshman team choice in 2014, Doherty earned first-team honors for the first time in her UC Davis career and became only the fifth different Aggie to earn first-team honors since becoming a member of the league in 2007-08, joining the likes of past Aggie greats Jessica Campbell, Paige Mintun, Samantha Meggison, and Sydnee Fipps.

In her first season, freshman post Morgan Bertsch was named to the All-Big West second team and earned a spot on the all-freshman squad, while sophomore Pele Gianotti and senior Celia Marfone were named to the honorable mention squad, earning all-league honors for the first time in their careers. With her all-freshman honor, Bertsch became the sixth UC Davis student-athlete named to that squad, joining Lauren Juric, Kasey Riecks, Doherty, Molly Greubel, and Dani Nafekh.

Doherty, who became the 17th player in the history of the program to reach 1,000 career points and enters the tournament ranked sixth on the school's all-time scoring list, ranked among the top 10 in the Big West in both scoring (12.3 ppg) and rebounding (6.2 rpg) at the end of the regular season, while also ranking fourth in field goal percentage (.504), fifth in free throw percentage (.777), second in blocks (48) and blocks per game (1.7 bog), and seventh in defensive rebounds (4.7 rpg).

She also ranks among the school's all-time leaders in blocked shots, knocking down 145 for her career to stand second -- just five shy of the all-time mark -- while her 48 swats for the season are third on the school's single-season chart.

One of the top newcomers in the league, Bertsch is riding a five-game double-digit scoring streak for the Aggies heading into the tournament, ranking fifth in the league in both scoring (13.3 ppg) and field goal percentage (.572) -- the latter mark standing No. 12 in the nation entering the week -- while posting a team-high nine games with 20-or-more points. The Santa Rosa, Calif., native set a school Division I freshman record with her 387 points this season -- one of only three UC Davis rookies to score more than 200 points in the program's Division I Era -- and could become the first freshman to lead the team in scoring since 1980.

Gianotti and Marfone were part of a balanced group that gave the Aggies threats inside and out. Gianotti finished the regular season ranked among the top 15 in both scoring (11.5 ppg) and rebounding (5.2 rpg), while standing ninth in the league in field goal percentage (.462) and minutes played (29.9 mpg), while ranking as one of the league's top deep threats, finishing second in three-point percentage (.395) and tied for fifth in three-pointers made (2.0 per game).

Marfone, meanwhile, has been a "jill-of-all-trades" this season, working inside to help lead the team on the glass while also proving to be one of the top long-range threats in the league. Coming off a career high-tying 15 rebounds in the regular season finale at UC Irvine, Marfone ranks 10th in the conference in rebounding at 6.2 rpg -- including a 6.7 rpg average in Big West Conference play to stand seventh. Shooting-wise, she leads the conference in three-point percentage (.400) and stands ninth in three-pointers made per game (1.3 per game).

The Aggies now turn their attention to this week's Big West Tournament, which begins Tuesday (March 8) with first-round games at the Bren Events Center in Irvine, Calif. By virtue of its fourth-place finish, UC Davis earned a first-round bye and will open its tournament run on Wednesday (March 9) against the highest-remaining seed at 8:30 p.m. in Irvine -- the site of its last win, a 76-70 victory over UC Irvine last Saturday.

The winners of Wednesday's quarterfinals advance to Friday's semifinal contests at the Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif., beginning at Noon. The championship game is scheduled for Saturday (March 12) at 3 p.m.
