SAN JOSE, Calif. - Senior Stephanie Stamates posting winning 9.875 scores on both balance beam and floor exercise to help lead UC Davis to a season-high 195.575 in a women's collegiate gymnastics triangular at the San Jose State Event Center Sunday afternoon.
The Aggies placed first in the meet to improve to 7-9 overall. The host Spartans finished more than a half-point behind in second at 194.925, while visiting Brown took third with a season-best 194.075.
UC Davis' overall team total ranks fifth in school history, surpassing the previous week's 195.225 for a 2016 best. The beam squad notched a 49.150 to miss the February 2014 school record of 49.175 by the minimum possible margin. The vaulters closed out the meet with an even 49.000, another season high and just the seventh 49-plus score in school history for that apparatus.
Stamates' tied teammate Alexis Brown for the individual beam title at 9.875, and won the floor exercise outright with an identical score in the meet's third rotation. Both Stamates and Brown tied their own personal bests on beam â€" Stamates for a fourth time, Brown for a second â€" a score that just misses the four-way share of the 9.900 program record.
Stamates, a team co-captain from Alamo, also raised her career total of 9.8-plus scores to 51, surpassing the previous UC Davis high of 49 set by Ericka Ruelas in 2002.
Equally impressive was the contribution of junior co-captain Taylor Baron, who made her first lineup appearance on beam in more than a year. She stuck a personal-best 9.825 to kick off the event, putting her in a tie for third place with freshman teammate Yasmine Yektaparast. Baron then followed with a career-high 9.750 on floor.
Sophomore Miranda Holder posted a 9.850 on floor to take part in a four-way tie for second place behind Stamates. Fellow second-year Amanda Presswood tied her season best of 9.825 for sixth. Baron and Judal each went 9.750 to help the Aggies compile a 49.050 in the event, the team's third effort above the 49-point threshold in the last four meets.
Brown and Katy Nogaki led the vault squad with 9.850 scores, while Yektaparast and junior Yonni Michovska added 9.775s toward the 49.000 total. Michovska scored a 9.700 on bars, as did freshman Aya Suzuki, competing in the lineup for just her second meet. Senior Dani Judal led the Aggies on bars at 9.775, good for second in the meet behind SJSU's Rachel Heinl.
In records dating back to 1998, this marks the first time UC Davis has won a meet at San Jose State, and just the second time the Aggies have outscored the Spartans in San Jose, after the season-opening NorCal Classic.
