Box Score March 4, 2016 CSU Bakersfield-UC Davis Box Score | UC Davis-Charleston Southern Box Score
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - UC Davis scored the first two runs of Friday morning's Stacy Winsberg Memorial Tournament Opener at Matador Diamond in Northridge, Calif., and held that 2-0 lead until the final two innings when CSU Bakersfield scored three in the top of the sixth, and another in the top of the seventh to defeat the Aggies, 4-2.
In the second game of the day, UC Davis jumped out to an early 3-0 lead before Charleston Southern responded by scoring twice in the first inning, another two run in the second and another in the third to take a 5-3 lead through three. Undaunted, UC Davis chopped its lead in half by scoring again in the fourth, but that was the last run recorded by either team as the Buccaneers held on for a 5-4 win.
The Aggies will enter the second day of action at the Winsberg with an 8-10 record and face Syracuse, at 10:30 a.m., at UCLA. Softball's Saturday schedule will conclude at CSUN with a 3 p.m. matchup against 13/12 Florida State.
Against CSU Bakersfield, Christina Guidry scored both Aggie runs, and touched home for the first time this morning in the bottom of the second on a Kelly Zboralske single.
Guidry led off the frame by reaching first base on a hit-by-pitch from Roadrunner starter Amber Mills. After collecting her second stolen base of the season, the senior third baseman scored when Zboralske's at-bat continued.
Two innings later, UC Davis doubled its lead when Alexis Carney singled to left, which allowed Guidry to score from second.
That 2-0 advantage remained as is until CSUB's half of the sixth, when it batted through its lineup and scored three runs on four hits.
However, the damage caused that inning could have been worse were it not for the efforts of Leah Munden, who recorded the final out of the inning with the bases full of Roadrunners.
Unable to score when it returned to the plate, UC Davis still remained within striking distance, even though Bakersfield turned a leadoff hit-by-pitch into its final run of the morning.
Unfortunately for the Aggies, they were unable to reach base safely in the bottom of the seventh, and were retired in order.
When softball returned to action at UCLA, UC Davis was brutally efficient in taking an early 3-0 lead by sending eight batters to the plate in the top of the first.
Brianna Warner started the game with a single to first base, advanced to second on a bunt single by Taylor Peters, and then touched the dish, along with her teammate, when Guidry hit a double down the left field line.
Before Carney, the Aggies' cleanup hitter, even entered the box, UC Davis already scored two runs.
After Guidry advanced to third base when Carney hit a single to short, she caught Charleston Southern with its guard down by successfully stealing home.
On that same play, Carney drew a throw to second on her stolen base attempt; once Guidry saw the ball sail across the diamond, she sprinted home to score UC Davis' third run.
By committing an error in the bottom of the first, the Aggies allowed Charleston Southern to respond with two runs of its own, both unearned.
In the following frame, the Buccaneers hit three straight singles, took advantage of a wild pitch, and pushed another two runs across the plate to take its first lead of the afternoon.
By hitting two doubles in its half of the third, CSU scored its final run of the day, and took a 5-3 lead into the fourth inning.
As was the case in the first inning for UC Davis, Warner led off the fourth by reaching base safely, and ultimately scored.
After collecting her 18th stolen base of the year, Carney collected her fourth double of the season by driving in Warner, which pulled the Aggies within one run of CSU.
With the score still 5-4, in Charleston Southern's favor, Kaila Olson placed herself in scoring position, with one out in the Aggies' half of the sixth thanks to a walk and a Warner sacrifice bunt.
As the inning progressed, Guidry advanced to first and joined Olson on base as UC Davis' go-ahead run.
However, neither runner was able to advance past their current positions since two strikeouts were recorded by CSU to end both the Aggies' scoring rally and the inning.
Even though Munden, who entered the game in relief, was able to retire CSU in order when the Aggies returned to the field, UC Davis fell victim to the same fate when it returned to the plate for its final set of at bats.
