DAVIS, Calif. - Hannah Harvey's steal and subsequent game-winning goal with 45 seconds left capped her four-goal night for the No. 6-ranked UC Davis women's water polo team as it edged No. 19 Hartwick, 12-11, in the Aggie Invitational at School Aquatics Center for Jamey Wright's 400th win as head coach.
The Aggies improved to 14-8 with the win while Hartwick fell to 12-6.
Allyson Hansen and
Bryn Lutz each scored two goals for UC Davis while Nikolina Mihajlovik had four and Sofia Polak netted three for the Hawks.
The Aggies won the match, which was played in rainy and windy conditions, after pulling away from an 8-8 tie entering the fourth quarter with three straight goals in a 90-second span, only to see Hartwick tie it late. Harvey, though, added her third goal of the fourth quarter after picking off a pass and then firing in the winning shot with just 45 seconds to go.
The game was tight throughout. Hansen and Ariel Arcidiacono scored two first-quarter goals to give the Aggies a 2-0 lead but the Hawks answered with two to tie it early in the second. It was tied three more times before halftime until Carla Tocchini's goal with 14 seconds remaining gave UC Davis a 6-5 lead at intermission.
Hartwick outscored the Aggies 3-2 to tie it 8-all going into the fourth but UC Davis surged with two scores by Harvey sandwiched around one by Lutz to go up 11-8 with 3:44 to go. The Hawks, though, came right back with two 6-on-5 goals from Mihajlovik and another score by Polak to tie it, 11-11, with 1:38 on the clock, setting up Harvey's heroics.
UC Davis previously dispatched Azusa Pacific by a 14-9 final in Friday's afternoon contest. Hansen scored five goals while Arcidiacono, Harvey and junior Bryn Lutz hit two apiece. Junior goalie Olivia Husted guarded the net for seven saves. The Aggies led wire-to-wire, including a 7-4 edge at halftime, although the Cougars pulled to within a two-goal deficit on three different instances in the third frame. However, Hansen assisted on two goals and netted one of her own in a 4-1 fourth to help pull away to the win.
Wright has been the only coach in the Aggies' history as a varsity program which dates back to 1997. He is a member of the USA Water Polo Hall of Fame. He earned his 300th win with a 10-6 win over Brown in 2010.
UC Davis is off until hosting Long Beach State in their Big West opener on Mar. 26.
