STANFORD, Calif. - Senior Ariel Arcidiacono and junior Carla Tocchini each totaled five goals to help No. 8 UC Davis to a split of its first-day action at the Stanford Invitational women's water polo tournament at Avery Aquatic Center Saturday. Arcidiacono had one of two Aggie hat tricks in a 10-8 loss to 10th-ranked Big West Conference rival UC Irvine, then Tocchini unleashed a career-best five goals in a 14-10 victory over No. 12 Pacific.

Tocchini scored one goal in the first, two in the second, then one each in the third and fourth in Saturday's nightcap against the Tigers. Arcidiacono, freshman Annie Kutt and senior Allyson Hansen each added two.

Hansen and Tocchini started UC Davis to a 2-0 start against Pacific but freshman Viktoria Szmodics and sophomore Karolina Hlavata combined for four goals in the second to give the Tigers a 5-3 edge. Tocchini completed her hat trick with 2:52 in the second to cut the deficit to one, then sophomore Heather Johnson tied the contest at 5-5. Hlavata and Aggie freshman Annie Kutt traded goals as the two teams went to the break in a 6-6 tie.

Arcidiacono led a six-goal explosion in the third to propel UC Davis to a 12-7 lead after three, and the Aggies maintained a lead of at least four the rest of the way.

In Saturday's opener, Arcidiacono and junior Bryn Lutz each scored hat tricks but the 10th-ranked Anteaters piled up four goals in the fourth quarter to erase what had been a 6-4 UC Davis lead early in the second half.

Arcidiacono netted two goals in the first quarter plus a 6-on-5 tally late in the second to propel UC Davis to a 5-3 edge with three minutes left in the first half. Mary Brooks scored the second of her three goals a minute later, bringing UCI to within 5-4 at the half. Lutz, who scored in each of the first two frames, opened the third quarter with a natural goal to extend the UC Davis edge to 6-4.

However, the Aggies went scoreless for the next nine minutes while allowing four unanswered 'Eater scores. Gabby Pierandozzi tied the contest at 6-6 to end the third and scored on even strength with 5:17 to go in the fourth to put UCI up by an 8-6 margin. Harvey halved the lead with her goal on the next possession, but the Anteaters responded with two more to pull away to a 10-7 lead with less than a minute to go.

UC Davis will make an early-morning drive to the Bay Area to face No. 5 California at 9:10 a.m. on Sunday, then will take on a team from the opposite bracket of San Jose State, LMU, Michigan and host Stanford to close the tournament.
