Feb. 27, 2016 IRVINE, Calif. - Junior Carla Tocchini, senior Allyson Hansen and junior Bryn Lutz each totaled three goals as No. 5 UC Davis split its first-day slate at the UCI Invitational women's water polo tournament at Anteater Aquatics Center. The Aggies held on to an 8-7 victory against No. 13 UC San Diego in their first-round game, then fell to No. 4 Stanford for the second time in as many weekends, this time by a 12-5 final.

Hansen scored the only Aggie hat trick of the day in Saturday's opener against UCSD. She hit back-to-back in the second quarter to tie the contest at 3-3, although UC Davis did not take the lead until after halftime, at which it trailed by a close 5-4 margin. Tocchini and junior Hannah Harvey scored back-to-back to open what would become a 4-0 frame for the Aggies, giving them an 8-5 edge heading to the finale. Tocchini had two goals in that run:skipping in a shot for the 5-5 equalizer in the first minute after the intermission, then again on a drive with 5:29 to play.
UCSD scored on goals by Alexis Wieseler and Lauren Boyer early in the fourth, and had a pair of power-play opportunities down the stretch, but UC Davis successfully defended against both.
In the nightcap, the Cardinal led wire-to-wire, scoring three unanswered to open, then employing a 6-0 run to pull ahead to a 9-2 edge at the break. Sophomore Greta Kohlmoos scored on a counterattack to put the Aggies on the board with 2:36 left in the first. Lutz scored with 2:18 remaining in the half, and hit her team's final tally on a 6-on-5 chance with five minutes to go in the fourth. Tocchini and freshman Annie Kutt also scored on exclusions in the second half.
UC Davis will open with ninth-ranked tournament host UC Irvine in Sunday's 8 a.m. contest. The Aggies will then take on either No. 3 Cal or No. 7 Michigan to close out the weekend.
