Feb. 21, 2016 DAVIS, Calif. - Senior center Allyson Hansen scored a pair of goals while drawing four exclusions, but No. 5 UC Davis could not overcome an early deficit in falling by a 14-5 final to No. 4 Stanford in the marquee matchup of the Davis Shootout Sunday session at Schaal Aquatics Center.
The Aggies slip to 10-5 for the year. The Cardinal, which later shut out unranked Brown, 17-0, moves to 8-1 overall.
Hansen drew first blood in the game with her goal out of set with 4:56 left in the first, then converted a power play late in the fourth for her second score. Freshman Marcela Portales, sophomore Greta Kohlmoos and sophomore Heather Johnson also added goals for UC Davis. Johnson also enjoyed a span in the second quarter in which she went face-to-face with her older sister, Rachel, a senior driver for Stanford.
After Hansen's initial tally, Stanford scored seven unanswered to hold a 3-1 lead through the first quarter and a 7-1 edge at the halftime break. Junior Jamie Neushul and senior Anna Yelizarova each scored two of their game-high four goals in that first half.
Portales netted her lone goal on a long lob early in the third quarter to bring the score to 7-2, while Kohlmoos hit the Aggies' third goal with 25 ticks left in that frame. Johnson buried a perimeter shot with less than a minute left to round out the UC Davis offense.
The Aggies struggled to just 5-for-24 shooting in the contest, compared to the Cardinal's 14-for-21 efficiency.
UC Davis competes in its fifth consecutive tournament, this time at the UCI Invitational on Saturday and Sunday. The Aggies are seeded fifth in a field consisting exclusively of nationally ranked teams, and pooled with Stanford, UC San Diego and LMU for Day 1.
