No. 5 UC Davis sweeps Saturday Shootout doubleheader

Feb. 20, 2016

DAVIS, Calif. - Juniors Bryn Lutz and Carla Tocchini each combined for five goals as No. 5 UC Davis posted a pair of wins in Saturday's portion of its home-opening Davis Shootout tournament at Schaal Aquatics Center. Lutz netted four goals in a 13-7 win over No. 24 CSU Bakersfield in the early matchup, while Tocchini and another junior, Hannah Harvey, each scored hat tricks in a 12-3 nightcap win over Brown.

The Aggies, playing with their highest regular-season national ranking in program history, improve to 10-4 for the year.

Tocchini and senior Allyson Hansen supported Lutz with two goals apiece against the Roadrunners. UC Davis exploded for five unanswered to start the game, and never saw its lead diminish by less than a four-goal margin for the remainder of the contest. The Aggies held a 6-1 lead at the end of the first, then pulled ahead to an 8-2 edge after a pair of 6-on-5 conversions by Lutz early in the second. UC Davis held a 9-3 lead at the break.

Hansen had her team's only goal in the third, while the 'Runners closed to within five on three different occasions in the second half. Cassandra Ream and Ashley Paz hit back-to-back to pull CSUB to an 11-7 deficit with 4:38 in the fourth but managed no more goals after that point. Lutz scored the last two of the game, first on a five-meter penalty shot for the hat trick, then on a natural goal with eight ticks left in the contest.

Junior goalkeeper Olivia Husted posted nine saves for the game, yielding the cage briefly to redshirt freshman Katy Heatherton in the third and fourth quarters.

In similar fashion to the opener, UC Davis scored five straight before yielding a Brown goal although that stretch was more protracted in the night cap. Harvey put up two goals in a 4-0 first quarter, then neither team could manage a goal in a defensive struggle in the second. Senior goalkeeper Haley Cameron notched eight of her nine saves before the break to hold the Bears scoreless throughout.

Brown finally got on the board when her shot went bar-under into the cage at 5:35 in the third, only to have the Aggies score four straight to extend their lead to 10-1 by the same point in the fourth. Jessica Heilman buried back-to-back perimeter shots for the Bears to account for her team's last offense.

Both games provided opportunities for the UC Davis reserves and freshmen. Rookie McKenna Hauss notched a goal in each contest, including the fourth quarter against Brown, during which Lauren Emge, Annie Kutt and Courtney Weddle also scored. Freshman Marcela Portales added a 6-on-5 goal in the third against the Bears. Junior transfer Avery Dotterer also relieved Cameron in the cage for the fourth quarter.

The Aggies conclude their tournament with a game against No. 4 Stanford at 10:30 a.m. Saturday morning.
