DAVIS, Calif. - UC Davis scored nine of its combined 10 runs during the first three innings of each game against Portland on Saturday, and outhit the Pilots in both matchups, but fell 9-6 and 7-4 in a pair of nonconference baseball games at Dobbins Stadium.
The sweep still keeps the Aggies looking for their first win of the young season, dropping them to 0-3. The Pilots are 3-0 after posting come-from-behind wins in both games. Catcher Cooper Hummel had four hits and knocked in three runs for the Pilots.
UC Davis outhit the Pilots 10-9 in the opener and 11-8 in the nightcap. The Aggies, however, also had seven errors on Saturday after playing errorless baseball in Friday's opener.
UC Davis was blanked in Friday's opener and managed just three hits but got the upper hand early in the opener on Saturday. The Aggies scored twice in the second and four more times in the third, turning a 1-0 deficit into a 6-1 lead.
Shortstop Jacob Thomas had a two-run double down the left-field line for the runs in the second while first baseman Mason Novak and left-fielder Alex Aguiar had RBI-singles in the third.
Starter Matt Blaise didn't allow any runs in the second or third innings for UC Davis but three hits and two unearned in the fourth got Portland back to within 6-5 before three more unearned runs in the sixth broke a 6-6 tie and gave the Pilots the lead for good.
Aguiar's leadoff double in the second game, followed by Thomas' single helped the Aggies tally three runs in their half of the first. Ryan Anderson doubled to left, scoring Tanner Bily for the second run, before he came around after a wild pitch and an errant throw into left on the play.
Aggie starter Justin Mullins allowed a couple of early runs and was leading 3-2 going to the fourth but center-fielder Caleb Whalen's leadoff triple deep into the alley in left-center helped the Pilots tie it when Hummel singled down the line.
Mark Cardinalli singled and Novak doubled in the home half of the fourth, and Cardinalli scored on an infield grounder, tying the game again, 4-4. But back-to-back doubles by Grant Taylor and Hummel in the sixth highlighted a three-run uprising by Portland, which chased Mullins and gave Portland a lead it would not relinquish.
Robert Garcia took the loss in the first game despite not allowing an earned run. He struck out five in 5-2/3 innings. Davis Tominaga went 6-1/3 in relief for Portland, earning his first win.
Mullins suffered the nightcap loss but had eight strikeouts and no walks while Chris Brown threw three innings of relief and only walked one while striking out two. Joey Chapman pitched the final two outs, getting both on K's.
Jackson Lockwood went five innings in the second game for Portland, allowing six hits, striking out a pair and walking none, but Marty Luckenbach got the win with two innings of shutout baseball.
"We're just making too many mistakes," said head coach Matt Vaughn. "We're young and we knew we were going to be young. We've tried to prepare for this but real games against someone wearing a different uniform is a whole different thing.
"When you're new, pretty much across the board with the exception of a couple of positions, you get to playing a little tight; and we're not having any fun right now because we're not playing the game the right way."
Shortstop Jacob Thomas and second baseman Brad Pluschkell each had two hits in the opener for UC Davis with Thomas adding two RBIs. Aguiar, Cardinalli and Novak each collected a pair of knocks in the nightcap.
The Aggies and Pilots will wrap up their four-game series with a 1 p.m. contest on Sunday at Dobbins Stadium.
