HONOLULU -- UC Davis freshman Morgan Bertsch finished with a team high 22 points and set a new career high with four blocks, but a 12-0 run by host Hawai'i to open the second half broke open a one-point game and lifted the Rainbow Wahine to a 70-50 win over the Aggies in a battle of second-place teams in the Big West Conference on Thursday night at the Stan Sheriff Center in Honolulu.
UC Davis had its three-game winning streak snapped as the Aggies fell to 15-10 overall and 8-4 in league play, splitting the season series with Hawai'i. The Rainbow Wahine, led by Destiny King's double-double of 13 points and 13 rebounds, won their sixth straight, improving to 16-9 overall and 9-3.
Bertsch finished 9-of-12 from the field to log her seventh 20-point game of the season and fall just three points shy of her career high. She added four rebounds in 27 minutes to finish as the only Aggie in double figures.
UC Davis burst out of the gates to the tune of a 13-0 run to start the game, holding Hawai'i without a point until the two-minute mark and without a field goal until Megan Huff's three-point play with 1:48 to go in the period.
The Rainbow Wahine then returned the favor, using lengthy runs to start the second and third quarters to break open the game. Hawai'i started the second on a 9-0 run and eventually used an 8-2 burst late in the quarter to take their first lead, 27-26, with 1:43 to play. The home team carried that lead into the locker room at the break, then broke open the one-point game with its game-breaking 12-0 run to put the contest out of reach.
A three-pointer by Celia Marfone stopped the bleeding, but the Aggies never got closer than 11 points the rest of the way. The Rainbow Wahine led by as many as 23 points with just under five minutes to play in the fourth.
UC Davis shot 40 percent from the field for the game, but were held to just 35 percent in the second half as Hawai'i made its run. The Rainbow Wahine rebounded from a poor shooting first quarter that had them shoot just 13 percent from the floor, to finish shooting 43 percent in the second half and just under 38 percent for the game.
Following the long flight home, the Aggies return to The Pavilion for its penultimate home game of the year, hosting unbeaten and league-leading UC Riverside on Saturday (Feb. 20) at 7 p.m.
