DAVIS, Calif. - Kelly Zboralske and Ashley Lotoszynski each had two hits and two RBIs while the UC Davis softball team erupted for five runs in its first two innings during a 7-1 win over CSU Bakersfield, on Saturday's second day of the Aggie Kickoff at La Rue Field.
The win, which was stopped in the bottom of the fifth inning due to darkness, evened the Aggies' early season record at 1-1 while the Roadrunners suffered their first loss, falling to 2-1. Leah Munden earned her first win in the circle for UC Davis after allowing just three hits and giving up just a solo unearned run while allowing just two baserunners after the first inning.
The Aggies scored two runs in the first and then added three more in the second, overcoming an early 1-0 deficit to forge a 5-1 lead after two innings.
"That was one of things that we really want to make an adjustment on from yesterday," said second-year head coach Erin Thorpe. "We wanted to come out and make sure that when we had runners in scoring position that we wanted to be in that batter's box, that we wanted to be the one to get the RBI."
Alexis Carney got it going for UC Davis with a one-out double to left-center field and then scored on Lotoszynki's double to the same spot. That scored both Carney and Zboralske, who reached on a walk.
A leadoff bunt single by Alicia Paine in the second inning, Kaila Olson's single up the middle and Taylor Peters' attempted sacrifice bunt that turned into a hit, loaded the bases in the second with no outs. Brianna Warner's single down the left-field line brought Paine around for the first run of the frame while Carney's sacrifice fly and Zboralske's single to center scored two more.
Meanwhile, Munden found smooth sailing after the first inning, putting down 11 of the final 13 batters she faced while striking out one.
"She pitched really well," said Thorpe. "She was consistent, she got hit and she came back and got the job done. That's all we ask of any of our pitchers and that's to get the job done."
UC Davis added single runs in the fourth and fifth to account for its seven total. The Aggies had the bases loaded in the bottom of the fifth with no one out before the game was called due to darkness.
UC Davis will face CSU Bakersfield at 1 p.m. tomorrow and then face Santa Clara at 3:15 on the tournament's final day. The Roadrunners will open Sunday's play with an 8:30 a.m. game against Montana while Santa Clara squares off against Sacramento State at 10:45 a.m.
