Box Score

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Another stellar effort on defense, a strong shooting performance in the second half, timely Santa Clara turnovers and a late 8-1 Aggie scoring run led to a 63-58 victory for UC Davis in its first head-to-head contest against the Broncos since Dec. 12, 1986.

UC Davis will enter Sunday's 12 p.m. matchup vs. Northern Arizona, its final one at the Cable Car Classic, with a 1-1 record. Santa Clara will also enter its final game of the weekend with a 1-1 mark.

From the first play of a game (a Bronco turnover) throughout the entire evening, UC Davis' defense kept the team within a two field-goal margin, until it took the lead for good with 8:15 left in the second half. By forcing 17 Santa Clara turnovers throughout the evening, the Aggies turned those miscues into 15 points and never trailed by more than six.

Until Santa Clara scored a buzzer-beating three at the end of the game, which turned an eight-point advantage into the final score, UC Davis prevented the tournament's host from scoring a basket in the preceding 2:50, and forced the Broncos to connect on only two of its last 11 shots of the night.

Aggie fans in attendance loved what they saw throughout the second half with UC Davis sinking 15 of 28 shots to turn a three-point halftime deficit into its first victory of the season.

Brynton Lemar led all players with 17 points, on 6 of 10 shooting, and sliced through Santa Clara's defense time and time again from the first, to the final minute of the second half. Of those 17 points, 11 were collected after the break.

In the first half, Chima Moneke scored six of his team's first eight points during the first seven minutes of the game, and ended his evening with 15 points and a team-high six rebounds.

Playing in his second game as an Aggie, Mikey Henn enjoyed a strong second half as well by scoring five of his seven points throughout his nine minutes on the court.

But it was a three-point play from J.T. Adenrele, with 2:34 left in the game, which turned a two-point lead into a five-point cushion. That play also forced another Bronco to foul out, and jump-started an 8-1 scoring run for the Aggies.

After Santa Clara pulled within two, with 2:54 remaining, Siler Schneider found Adenrele sprinting down court, and launched the perfect three-quarter court pass to his teammate. After taking one dribble near the left elbow, the senior forward muscled his way through the paint, attacked the rim, and was fouled on his layup.

Adenrele's layup was two of 30 points the Aggies scored in the paint; their bench also scored more than twice as many points compared to Santa Clara's reserves (27-11).

Led by Hanrik Jadersten's 17, three Broncos scored double figures with Jared Brownridge and Jarvis Pugh chipping in 13 and 10 respectively.

UC Davis will look to end its weekend in Santa Clara with a 2-1 record, and will have an opportunity to do so against Northern Arizona. In addition to Scott Marsh's call on KSAC 105.5 FM, an internet broadcast and live stats are also available at UCDavisAggies.com.
