STANFORD, Calif. - Mother Nature made her presence known during a rainy first day at the Stanford Intercollegiate women's golf tournament on Friday but UC Davis persevered to overcome a tough start with a solid finish in the first round at Stanford Golf Course.
The Aggies shot a 25-over 309 on Friday and are in 17th place heading into the weekend's 36 holes. Senior Paige Lee led UC Davis with a 4-over 75 while freshman Rei Nakatani - sparked by a 1-under back nine - finished with a 77. Freshman Christine Danielsson shot 78 while sophomore Samantha Hutchison and freshman Yoonhee Kim each carded 79. Alexandra Zeng, playing as an individual, shot 93.
The Aggies five scoring players, who started their day on the 10th hole, were a combined 25 over after nine holes but rebounded to go just 8 over the rest of the way. Nakatani led the way by shooting a 1-under 34 on the course's front nine, including picking up birdies on the par-5 seventh hole and the par-4 ninth to finish impressively.
"Today we had to battle the elements. The front nine got the better of us but we turned it around on the back nine and started to put together some good holes," said head coach Anna Temple. "Rei finished with a strong 2 under on her last four holes and that toughness really helped. We have some things that can improve in the long run, but if we play the way we did on our back nine, I know we can accomplish some good things."
Lee is tied for 40th after playing each side of the course just 2 over. She picked up her lone birdie on the par-4 fifth hole. Nakatani, who is tied for 60th, added six pars and just one bogey on her back nine. Danielsson had seven pars over her final nine holes and is tied for 62nd while Hutchison, who was also just 2 over on her back nine, had two birdies. Kim was just 1 over on her final six holes and joins Danielsson in a tie for 72nd. Zeng ended her day with a birdie on the par-4 18th.
The tournament, which features 14 teams ranked in the top 50 including six in the top 10, is being led by 17th-ranked Northwestern, which was 1 over. The Wildcats lead No. 8 UCLA by two shots. San Diego State's Georgia Lacey shot a 67 to take the individual lead.
UC Davis will start the second round on the 10th hole beginning at 10 a.m. on Saturday. The tournament concludes on Sunday.
