Jan. 17, 2016 SAN JOSE, Calif. - Junior utility Bryn Lutz scored five goals to lead No. 9 UC Davis to a 14-10 victory over No. 10 Pacific, hours after junior Carla Tocchini posted a hat trick to pace the Aggies to an 11-5 win over CSU Bakersfield, combining for a sweep of Sunday's competition at the LouStrong Memorial women's water polo tournament at San Jose State Aquatics Center.
UC Davis moves to 3-1 for the year.
Lutz and junior Hannah Harvey each finished with a team-leading five goals on the day. Lutz had all of hers in the afternoon contest with the Tigers. Harvey netted two goals in the opener against the Roadrunners then followed with three against Pacific. Tocchini added a goal against Pacific for four total. Sophomore Jill Bushman also managed a goal in each Sunday contest.
Senior goalkeeper Haley Cameron totaled 25 saves in six quarters of work. She stopped 13 shots in the first half against CSUB before Olivia Husted relieved her for the second half with six blocks. Cameron then added another 12 against Pacific.
UC Davis never trailed in the morning win, scoring three unanswered to start the contest then amassing a 7-2 lead with two minutes left in the second quarter after back-to-back Harvey goals. The Aggies led, 8-3, at the break. Tocchini's strike at 6:12 in the third was the only scoring by either team, then Bushman and freshman McKenna Hauss scored in the fourth.
In contrast to the wire-to-wire win over Bakersfield, UC Davis trailed early against Pacific and did not take its first lead until late in the third. Tiger freshman Kyra Christmas scored three of her six total goals in the opening stanza, propelling her team to a 3-1 start. The Aggies eventually tied the contest at 5-5 on Lutz' successful 6-on-5 conversion but Pacific's Rachel Krieger answered with her own power-play goal to regain the lead with 2:07 left. The Tigers held that one-goal edge at the break.
Lutz and Harvey each equalized early in the pivotal third, the latter goal igniting a 5-0 run that pushed UC Davis ahead to a 11-7 lead. Senior Allyson Hansen, Bushman, freshman Annie Kutt and Lutz each scored as part of that comeback effort. Christmas and Karolina Hlavata helped the Tigers back to within two to start the fourth, and Christmas' five-meter penalty shot brought the Aggie lead to just 12-10 with 6:24 remaining. However, the Aggies locked down the cage the rest of the way.
UC Davis goes idle from competition for the next two weeks, returning to action at the Stanford Invitational on February 6-7.
