DAVIS, Calif. -- UC Davis seniors Trevor Halsted and Christine Hoffmann each posted second-place finishes on the day, and the Aggies placed all five scorers in the top 10 on a blustery Saturday morning, lifting the men's and women's squads to identical 23-38 victories over rival Sacramento State at the Putah Creek Reserve Course in Davis, California.
"Warm, dusty, windy... it wasn't ideal conditions today, but I thought both teams did a great job handling the environment and conditions," coach Devin Elizondo said. "I think, top to bottom, the leadership of the group and execution was really important on a day when you want to run fast, but you have to throw that out the window and just compete."
The Hornets' Jacob Huston (18:27) on the men's side and Chloe Berlioux (13:52) each claimed individual honors in their respective races, as both teams posted identical finishes over the 6K and 4K courses, respectively.
Halsted, racing in his first competition since 2013 after missing all of last season due to injury, led the way for UC Davis on the men's side, completing the 6K course in a time of 18:31 -- trailing Huston's winning time by four seconds. Senior Cody Nguyen (18:39) followed in third, ahead of a tight group of Aggies in fifth through ninth places, to secure the win.
Senior Amar Dholakia finished fifth (18:57), followed by a dead heat between Austin Goins and Nick Ratto, who crossed in 19:02, to complete the scoring.
"I've talked about the sophistication that Trevor Halsted brings to us and that calming effect, as well as moving well as packs... I thought we paired up well," Elizondo said. "Both teams planned their race and raced their plan," Elizondo said. "It was really smart how they set up, they pushed when they needed to push, and we had some real nice success stories."
In Saturday's second race, the defending Big West Conference champion UC Davis women's team was led by Hoffmann's time of 13:56 -- just four seconds back of Berlioux's winning time. The two battled for top honors in this meet last season as well, with Hoffmann pulling away from Berlioux to win by seven seconds. Both runners bested their times of 14:17 for Hoffmann and 14:24 for Berlioux from 2014.
Senior Erika Barr finished third in a time of 14:10, and was followed by Clara MacLeod in fifth (14:38), Nicole Lane in sixth (14:40), and Rianna Goins in seventh (14:42), to wrap up the scoring for the Aggies.
A number of newcomers got their first taste of action at the Division I level for UC Davis on Saturday as freshmen Katherine Gallaher (14:53) and and Muna Alhamad (15:09) both posted top-10 finishes in their debuts, finishing eighth and ninth, respectively. Natalie Cooper (14:59), Molly Rinefort (16:04), and Lorena Mendoza (16:31), also made their debuts.
"The young women, for their first time in uniform, really shined and added something to our veteran group, which I know they are going to be really excited to see," Elizondo said.
The men's and women's teams are both back in action next Saturday, heading to Southern California to compete in the UC Riverside Invitational on Sept. 12. It will serve as a "sneak peek" of the course that will be used for this year's Big West Conference Championships on Oct. 31.
"I think we've got a good blueprint for success next week," Elizondo said. "We take it out another 2K for each group, so taking those blueprints, executing, knowing that field sizes are going to get larger, races are going to be faster and harder earlier... I think this was a good, positive, momentum builder, especially for our younger runners."
