Aug. 22, 2015 DAVIS, Calif. -- Senior midfielder Ryan Gross finished with a goal and an assist, while teammates Lucas Mohageg and Lizandro Torres also found the back of the net on Saturday evening, lifting host UC Davis to a 3-1 exhibition victory over visiting Chico State at the Aggie Soccer Field.
The match served as the lone tune-up for the Aggies, who open their regular season next weekend with a trip to the Pacific Northwest, taking on Seattle (Aug. 28) and Washington (Aug. 30).
"I felt like we played well," Head Coach Dwayne Shaffer said. "I feel like we've been working hard all through last spring and this preseason to play a style that fits our personnel with some possession, as well as putting pressure on teams, and I felt like we accomplished that today."
UC Davis, which outshot the Wildcats by a 20-7 count and had 11 corners to none for the visitors, got on the board twice in a four-minute span in the first half as Mohageg headed home a pass from Hoshang Hatifie at the left post in the 12th minute for the 1-0 lead. Torres made it a two-goal advantage in the 16th minute, as a short throw by Gross was crossed by Dashiell MacNamara to Torres, who headed home another at the left post to make it 2-0.
Matt Hurlow pulled a goal back with an unassisted strike in the 21st minute, eluding a defender and rocketing a shot to the left post to make it a one-goal deficit at the break.
The Aggies' offense pressed forward, accounting for 13 of the 16 shots taken in the second half, finally breaking through for an insurance strike in the 83rd minute. Newcomer Evan Alvarez took a ball down the left side and passed across the top of the box to a wide open Gross, who slotted home the final goal to the lower left corner for the final 3-1 score.
Gross and sophomore Evan Barrett each finished with a team-high three shots while 12 UC Davis players finished with shots overall. Hurlow accounted for four of the Wildcats' seven shots, putting a pair on frame.
Junior Armando Quezada and senior Kris Schultz split time in net for the Aggies, each playing a half, while Andrew Matthews finished with five saves between the pipes for Chico State in the loss.
