SACRAMENTO, Calif. — UC Davis dropped its season opener to Sacramento State, 3-1, Thursday at Hornet Field. Despite outshooting Sacramento State 21-13, the Aggies could not overcome the three goals tallied by the home team.
Sacramento State established an early advantage when Hiroshi Yang scored on a penalty kick in the eighth minute. UC Davis attempted to respond with multiple shots from
Rafael Matiello and
Isaac Chacing but could not find the net. Sacramento State extended its lead in the 38th minute through Zac Giles, assisted by Henry Hedden, closing the first half at 2-0.
In the second half, Sean Battistessa increased Sacramento State's lead to 3-0 in the 67th minute, with assists from Zac Giles and Hiroshi Yang. UC Davis responded in the 82nd minute when
Diego Orosco scored, assisted by
Declan Horio, narrowing the gap to 3-1. The Aggies continued to press, with multiple shots saved by Sacramento State's goalkeeper Lucas Bost, including attempts from Chacing and
Tristan Wouters. Despite their efforts, UC Davis could not close the deficit further before the match ended.
Orosco recorded the lone goal for UC Davis, and Horio added an assist with two shots. Goalkeeper
Talin Morgan made three saves while facing 13 shots.
Joshua Gault contributed with two shots, one of which was on target.
UC Davis stands at 0-1-0 after the match, while Sacramento State improves to 1-0-0.
