DAVIS, Calif. — UC Davis erased a two-goal halftime deficit with two second-half goals, including an equalizer from
Nico Collins in the 88th minute, to earn a 2-2 draw with Cal Poly on Sunday night at Aggie Soccer Field.
The Aggies (0-1-1) outshot the Mustangs 13-0 after halftime and 17-5 overall as Cal Poly (0-0-2) finished the match with nine players following two red cards.
The first half produced four of the match's six cards. UC Davis'
Michael Bulloch and Cal Poly's Jack Civitts received yellow cards 21 seconds apart in the 23rd minute before Roman Anast gave the Mustangs the lead at 23:46 off an assist from Rylan Firouznam.
Parker Mascott doubled the advantage at 39:05, finishing a chance created by Devin Bening. The entire match changed shortly before halftime when Cal Poly's Keagan Rhodes was shown a red card at 44:40.
Gunner Parker received a yellow during the same stoppage, sending the Mustangs into halftime with a 2-0 lead but only 10 players.
Cal Poly was reduced down to nine players when Devin Rosas received the match's second red card at 48:46. UC Davis broke through less than three minutes later as
Luke Castagnola scored unassisted at 51:41 for his first goal of the season.
Cal Poly's Finn Linas received the match's final yellow card in the 64th minute. The Mustangs finished with two red cards and two yellows, while the Aggies received two yellows.
UC Davis continued to apply pressure throughout the second half with Castagnola nearly netting his second goal of the night with a strike to the left post in the 79th minute, while Cal Poly goalkeeper Mathew Guerra denied
Diego Orosco in the 86th.
Collins found the equalizer at 87:52, scoring his first goal of the season to complete the comeback.
Collins recorded a match-high five shots with two on goal, while Castagnola finished with four attempts. Orosco added three shots, including one on target. The Aggies held a 7-4 advantage in corner kicks, including a 5-0 margin after halftime.
Talin Morgan made one save over 90 minutes for UC Davis. Guerra recorded three saves for Cal Poly.
UC Davis travels to Pacific on Thursday, Aug. 27, for a 7 p.m. match in Stockton.
