Men's water polo to train in Spain

July 15, 2015

BARCELONA - UC Davis men's water polo embarked on an eight-day team training camp at the Barcelona International Water Polo Academy in Spain's second-largest city. The Aggies will train and scrimmage with the Federació Catalana de Natació junior team, with all sessions held at the Piscina Municipal de Montjüic (Montjüic Municipal Pool).

The UC Davis team will return on Thursday, July 23.

The Aggies enter their third season under the tutelage of head coach Daniel Leyson, who is no stranger to the Spanish water polo scene. After his collegiate playing days at USC and his two-year stint with the U.S. National Team, he played for the 11-time Copa del Rey-champion Club Natació Atlètic-Barceloneta.

Five of the eight days will consist of training at Montjüic in the morning, with an evening session with the FCN. The Catalan junior squad features the majority of Spanish Junior National Team, minus two Madrid-based players. That team is preparing for the FINA Junior Championships in Kazakhstan in September. Aquatics fans will remember the Piscina Municipal de Montjüic venue as the preliminary water polo site during the 1992 Olympic Games.

The Aggie men's water polo Facebook page is https://www.facebook.com/UCDavisMensWaterPolo. The team also posts updates to Instagram (ucdavismwp) and Twitter (ucdavismwp). Information about the BIWPA is available at http://www.biwpa.com/en/ (English site).

UC Davis finished 16-17 in 2014, ranking 13th in the year-end national coaches' poll.
