FIRST PITCH: Coming off a thrilling 6-5 victory over San Jose State in a midweek clash, the UC Davis baseball team (22-16-1 overall, 5-7 in the Big West) takes a break from conference play this weekend with a three-game series against former league rival Pacific. The Aggies and Tigers open the set on Friday (April 23) at 2:30 p.m. at Dobbins Stadium, before the scene shifts to Stockton for games two and three on Saturday (April 24) and Sunday (April 25). First pitch from Klein Family Field in those games is scheduled for 6 p.m. and 2 p.m., respectively.
IN THE POLLS: UC Davis and Pacific are both unranked to begin the week.

YOU'RE ON THE AIR: Due to scheduling conflicts, this year's broadcast schedule on KDVS 90.3 FM has changed a bit, beginning with this weekend's series against UC Riverside. The station is scheduled to carry games one and three against the Highlanders, as well as contests against Saint Mary's (March 31), Cal State Fullerton (April 11), Sacramento State (May 5), and all three games of the Aggies' Big West series against Cal Poly (May 21-23).
SCOUTING THE TIGERS: Pacific enters the weekend with a 9-29 overall record -- with six of those wins coming in West Coast Conference play where the Tigers are 6-12 thus far... Pacific has lost two straight, and six of its last eight, with its only victories in that span coming in a midweek contest against Sacramento State (9-6) and the opener of a three-game conference series at Loyola Marymount (4-3)... Friday's game at UC Davis marks the end of a nine-game road swing for the Tigers, who have not played at home since a 4-3 win over Stanford on April 6... Senior outfielder Tyler Sullivan leads all regulars with a .344 average, scoring 26 times, slamming 10 doubles, and driving in 15, in 38 starts this season... Junior shortstop Brett Sullivan (6) and junior outfielder Gio Brusa (4) have combined to slug 10 of the team's 16 home runs this season... The bookends of the Tigers' weekend rotation, Jake Jenkins and Michael Benson, share the team lead with two wins apiece on the hill, while Saturday's starter, Will Lydon, leads the rotation with a 4.78 ERA and 53 strikeouts (against 16 walks) in 64 innings... Opposing offenses are batting .302 against the Pacific pitching staff, which has posted a 5.62 ERA this season.
SERIES NOTES VERSUS PACIFIC: According to available records that date back to 1960, the all-time series between the Highway 99 neighbors UC Davis and Pacific is close, with the Tigers holding a 49-43-1 edge overall and a 10-9 mark since both the Aggies and Tigers have been Division I rivals... UC Davis has won the last two meetings with its former Big West Conference rival, posting a 4-3 win last season as part of the Jack Gifford Memorial Tournament, and winning the final game of the final league series between the two schools, 10-7, in 2013... The Aggies have won the last three straight series against the Tigers -- two of those in Stockton -- taking 2-of-3 on each occassion... In the Division I era, UC Davis is 4-5 against Pacific in Stockton... The last series sweep by either school came in 2010, when the Tigers took three straight games at Dobbins Stadium as part of a six-game winning streak in the series.
A LOOK BACK - UC DAVIS 6, SAN JOSE STATE 5: Senior Austin March's one-out single in the bottom of the ninth plated teammate Nick Lynch with the winning run as UC Davis walked-off with a 6-5 victory over Bay Area rival San Jose State on April 21 at Dobbins Stadium. Lynch reached on a one-out walk and moved to second on Izaak Silva's infield single to bring up March, who smashed a chopper off the glove of the first baseman and into right field. As Lynch rounded third, the throw from the outfield was cutoff and the Aggies' first baseman was able to slide in safely to end the game. March, Cameron Olson, and John Williams, added two hits each as every UC Davis starter finished with a hit. Sophomore right-hander Zach Stone improved to 3-1 on the year after the Spartans tied the game with a pair in the top of the ninth off the Aggies' closer. A complete recap of the game is available online at http://www.ucdavisaggies.com/sports/m-basebl/recaps/042115aab.html.
CLOSING IN: Thanks to their victory over San Jose State on April 21, the Aggies enter the weekend with a 22-16-1 overall record and a 5-7 mark in Big West play, standing just one win overall and two Big West victories shy of last year's totals when UC Davis finished 23-31 overall and 7-17 in league games. With 18 regular season games remaining, the Aggies need to finish with at least six wins in that stretch to end the year at .500, while seven wins give UC Davis only its second winning season at the Division I level (putting them at 29-27-1), and its first since the 2008 squad ended the year at 35-24 overall and a trip to the NCAA regionals.
WALK-OFF THIS WAY: Deja vu... the sensation that we've experienced this before. This is getting to be a habit for senior Austin March, who tallied his third "walk-off" hit of the season to lift the Aggies to a 6-5 victory over San Jose State. In the right place at the right time, March also has game-winning hits in victories over Eastern Michigan (Feb. 24) and UC Riverside (March 28) -- the latter coming in the bottom of the 11th -- and moved him into a tie with Nick Lynch, who just happened to score the game-winning run, for the most game-winning RBI this season (three).
T.G.I.F.: The Aggies must be happy to see Friday roll around as they have experienced some success in series openers as of late. Behind Spencer Koopman's complete-game victory at No. 19 UC Irvine last week, UC Davis has won three of its last four against the opposition's "ace," also posting wins over UC Riverside (12-3) and Cal State Fullerton (3-2) in that stretch. Overall, the Aggies moved above .500 on Friday nights with their win over the Anteaters, improving to 5-4 in nine weekend series openers, outscoring opponents, 51-43, in those games.
HE KEEPS GOING... AND GOING... AND GOING: Like the Energizer Bunny, senior backstop Izaak Silva just keeps going behind the plate for the Aggies. The senior, who has appeared in 38 of the team's 39 games, has caught all but 22 (over a span of nine games) of a possible 350.2 innings thrown by the pitching staff in 2015.
SILVA SWINGING THE HOT BAT: It came down to his final at-bat against San Jose State, but Silva got the job done, as his high-chopping infield single was his first of the day, extending his hitting streak to nine games -- the longest active streak by a UC Davis hitter and tied for the second-longest on the team this season. During his run, Silva is hitting a robust .474 (18-for-38) with five multi-hit games, scoring seven runs, driving home five more, and slugging six extra-base hits -- including his first career home run on April 12 against Cal State Fullerton. In the process, Silva has raised his average 38 points to a Big West Conference-best .371 on the year.
SO IS LIPSON: Not to be outdone, Tino Lipson has found his stroke at the plate midway through the season, collecting hits in 22 of his last 24 games (including a team-high 13-game hitting streak from March 7-April 3), and raising his average nearly 100 points from .241 at the start of the run to .340 entering this weekend's series against Pacific. Along the way, Lipson has finished with multiple hits in 13 of those games, including five straight from March 27-April 2 and a string of three straight three-hit games from April 14-18. Lipson leads all Aggie hitters with 17 multi-hit games this season.
STRIKE FIRST, STRIKE HARD, NO MERCY, SIR!: The first inning has been the best inning this season for the Aggies, who have scored in the opening frame 20 times (winning 12 of those games) and have out-scored the opposition by a 39-21 count -- making it the highest scoring inning for UC Davis this season.
THE HITS JUST KEEP ON COMING: Thanks to their 12 hits in their victory over San Jose State, the Aggies logged their fifth consecutive (and their 20th overall) game with double-digit hits -- the team's longest such streak since a six-game run from March 7-15 last season. UC Davis posted a season-high 18 hits in a 13-1 win at Seattle on March 7 -- the most since exploding for 21 hits in a 12-3 win over Hawai'i on May 18, 2014.
BILY ON BASE: Junior outfielder Tanner Bily hasn't just been getting on base... he's been doing it A LOT. Following a double and a pair of walks against San Jose State, the Anaheim Hills, Calif., native has reached base safely in each of his last 22 games -- passing teammate Austin March, who reached base in each of the first 21 games to start the year, for the longest streak this season. Bily has hits in 16 of those 22 games (27 hits total), watching his average rise from .145 at the start to .252 entering the weekend, walking 11 times and hit by a pitch three others, posting an on-base percentage of .414 during the streak.
HE'S GOING THE DISTANCE: Senior right-hander Spencer Koopmans was stellar in the Aggies' 8-3 upset of No. 19 UC Irvine in the series opener, going the distance while scattering seven hits to win his second-straight start. It was the first career complete game for the San Jose, Calif., native and the first for an Aggie pitcher since Harry Stanwyck against Hawai'i on May 16, 2014. In his last two outings, Koopmans has posted a 1.29 ERA in 14 innings, allowing just two earned on nine hits, while going head-to-head against the "aces" of two of the Big West's power programs in Cal State Fullerton and UC Irvine.
THREE HITS ARE BETTER THAN ONE: Thanks to their performances in games one and three, respectively, at UC Irvine, Izaak Silva and Nick Lynch each posted their team-best fifth three-hit games of the year and their sixth games with three hits or more.
QUALITY YOU CAN COUNT ON: Even though he left with a no-decision, senior right-hander Raul Jacobson pitched well in game two of the series against the Anteaters, allowing just two earned runs on nine hits while pitching into the eighth inning of a game that UCI would eventually rally to win, 4-3, in the 12th. It was Jacobson's team-high fifth quality start of the season, breaking a tie he had held with teammate Orlando Razo.
TURN TWO: The three double plays turned in game two of the series at UC Irvine tied a season high accomplished against Eastern Michigan (Feb. 24) and Hawai'i (April 2). The Aggies lead the Big West (and rank No. 43 in the NATION) with 38 double plays turned -- nine of those coming in the last five games.
SLASH LINE STANDOUT: Leading the way for one of the Big West Conference's best offenses this season has been Lynch, who enters the weekend ranked third in the league in average (.361) while standing second in both on-base percentage (.466) and slugging (.576) following Tuesday's game against San Joe State. The league leader with 36 runs scored this season, Lynch also ranks among the league's top 10 in doubles (1st, 21); hits (T2nd, 52); RBI (9th, 25); hit by pitch (2nd, 14); total bases (1st, 83); and extra-base hits (1st, 25).
ALL ABOUT THOSE BASES, `BOUT THOSE BASES...: No trouble for the Aggies when it comes to extra base hits this season. UC Davis has clubbed a Big West-best 111 extra-base hits this season (UC Irvine is second with 91), including 92 doubles -- surpassing its total from all of last year (75), leading the Big West (the Anteaters are second with 64), and ranking No. 12 in the NATION behind Morehead State, who leads the way with 112.
MOVIN' ON UP: Leading the way with 21 of those 92 doubles is Nick Lynch, who enters the weekend leading the NATION in that category as well as doubles per game (0.54). He is only the seventh player in the history of the program to reach that plateau, ranking third on the school's single-season list and standing three shy of Jim Saunders' 1979 record of 24.
MILESTONES: Lynch also reached a number of other career milestones on Tuesday against the Spartans: moving into sixth on the all-time games played list (193), ninth in at-bats (648), fourth in hits (215), tied for 10th in RBI (113).
EXTRA, EXTRA: Thanks to a double by John Williams and Cameron Olson's RBI triple against San Jose State on Tuesday, the Aggies have now tallied at least one extra-base hit in each of its last 18 games dating back to a 1-0 victory at Fresno State on March 15, when UC Davis talled seven singles and scored the game-winner on an error in the ninth -- standing as the only time this season that the Aggies have finished without an extra-base hit.
SEVENTH HEAVEN: Junior right-hander Max Cordy and his seven wins on the mound are the most by an Aggie pitcher since Dayne Quist finished 7-4 during his 2010 campaign. His seven straight wins was the best start by a UC Davis hurler in the Division I era and the most since Vince DeCoito won the same number en route to an 8-2 record in 2004, while the 7-0 start was the best since Colby Craig started the 1994 season 11-0 before losing his final start of the year against UC Riverside in the NCAA Division II West Regional.
A LONG TIME IN COMING: You'd have to go all the way back to UC Davis' first official Division I season in 2008 to find a pitcher with at least eight wins in a single season. That honor is held by Brad McAtee, who finished 8-5 in 15 starts with a 3.18 ERA to help the Aggies to their inaugural NCAA regional berth.
SHUT THE DOOR AND CALL ME ZACH: Sophomore right-hander Zach Stone picked up his seventh save of the year to nail down a 3-2 win over Cal State Fullerton back on April 10 -- a total that has him second in the Big West entering the weekend -- continuing a stingy stretch that has him listed among those considered for the NCBWA's "Stopper of the Year" Award for the second consecutive season (more on that later in these notes). In 26.2 innings this season, Stone has posted a 3-1 record to go along with a 0.68 ERA, scattering 19 hits while holding opponents to a .204 average.
ZACH ATTACK ON THE RECORD BOOK: Stone's seven saves this season place him in a tie for sixth on the school's single-season chart, while his 16 career saves have him in sole possession of second place on the all-time list, needing just three more as an Aggie to match Justin Fitzgerald (2005-08) and his school record of 19 set during his four-year Aggie career.
IT'S ALL A BLUR: Did you see that? Could you see that? Opposing catchers, apparently, cannot as the Aggies have wreaked havoc on the basepaths to the tune of 90 stolen bases in 124 attempts -- a number that stands fourth in the NATION entering this weekend's games against Pacific, standing behind only Texas Southern (111), Campbell (102), and Wofford (101). UC Davis -- which has stolen at least one base in all but six games this year -- has more than doubled its output from all of last season when they were a combined 38-for-59 in 54 games. The team record for steals was set in 1993 as UC Davis swiped 144 in 191 attempts, while the Big West Conference record is held by UC Santa Barbara, which stole 158 bases in 1990. Should the Aggies reach the century mark, they would become the first Big West school to do so since Cal State Fullerton (112) in 2010.
STOP! THIEVES!: The Aggies' 90 steals are the most for a UC Davis squad since the 1997 team stole 128 bases in 160 attempts, and only the fourth time since that season that the Aggies have stolen 60 bases or more in a year.
THE BRUISE CREW: So, how does one get an opportunity to steal so many bases? Well, there are many, but the one that probably hurts the most is the one the Aggies have been very adept at thus far this season. UC Davis has been plunked by a pitch 67 times this season -- leading the Big West Conference, and standing seventh in the NATION in that category, trailing Louisiana Tech (72). Individually, Nick Lynch (No. 15) ranks among the nation's top 50 in the category with 14.
GET THIS MAN AN ICE PACK: Lynch's 14 HBP's this season upped his career total to 50 heading into the weekend, giving him sole possession of second on the UC Davis all-time list and standing six back of career leader Jason Shapiro (1991-94).
NO RUNS FOR YOU!: UC Davis' 4-0 win over Hawai'i in the finale of a four-game series marked the Aggies' third shutout of the season -- the most since the 2012 squad finished with six. UC Davis' back-to-back 1-0 shutouts in wins over Fresno State (March 15) and San Francisco (March 24) marked the first time that the Aggies had shutout back-to-back opponents since March 11 and March 18, 2012, in wins over Seattle (3-0) and San Jose State (4-0), respectively. According to available year-by-year results that date back to 1960, it was also the first time that UC Davis had won consecutive games by 1-0 scores.
