Box Score

DAVIS, Calif. -- For the third time this season, senior outfielder Austin March came up with runners in scoring position in the bottom of the ninth and did not disappoint, smashing a single through the right side to plate teammate Nick Lynch all the way from second base, sending UC Davis home with a 6-5 walk-off win over San Jose State on Tuesday afternoon at Dobbins Stadium.

The win improved the Aggies to 22-16-1 overall, putting them one win shy of last year's win total with 18 regular season games remaining heading into this weekend's series against Pacific. The Spartans, who rallied to tie the game with two in the ninth, fell to 10-31 overall with the loss, dropping their fourth consecutive game.

Lynch reached on a one-out walk and moved to second when Izaak Silva's sky-high chopper on the infield grass was fielded cleanly by the shortstop, but the throw was not in time as Silva beat it out by a step. That brought up March, who smashed a chopper that glanced off the glove of the first baseman and bounced into right field for a hit.

Making the turn home was Lynch as the throw came in, but was cut off by a Spartans' infielder and no throw was made to the plate to get Lynch, who slid in safely with the winning run.

March has also had walk-off hits against Eastern Michigan (Feb. 24) and UC Riverside (March 28), finishing 2-for-4 with a walk and a run scored. Cameron Olson, who joined Tanner Bily with a pair of runs scored, and John Williams also added two hits apiece as every UC Davis starter finished with at least one hit, leading the Aggies to their fifth consecutive game with 10-or-more hits.

Sophomore closer Zach Stone (3-1) earned the win in relief despite giving up the tying run in the ninth, charged with one earned on one hit. Junior Spencer Henderson was also stellar in relief of starter Matt Blais, allowing just one hit and striking out two over 3.2 innings of work, getting a ground ball double play to end the fifth after the Spartans had tied it at 3-3, and retiring nine straight after that.

Making his first career start, Blais was charged with one earned run on seven hits, striking out one over 4.1 innings, retiring the first six batters of the game and keeping San Jose State off the scoreboard with a 4-6-3 double play to end the third.

A sacrifice fly by Lynch in the first and a wild pitch in the third staked the Aggies to the early 2-0 lead, but the Spartans bounced back with a pair in the fourth on a double by David Campbell and an RBI single by Joe Stefanki, who led the team with a pair of hits, to tie the game.

A wind-aided RBI triple by Olson in the fifth and an RBI single to center by Williams regained the lead for UC Davis, before San Jose State rallied again in the ninth, scoring on a passed ball and a groundout to the right side with one out to tie it and set up March's last at-bat heroics.

Silva's single in the ninth extended his hitting streak to nine games, the longest active streak by an Aggie hitter and tied for the second-longest streak this season. Lynch reached a number of milestones in the game: hit by a pitch in the third, which moved him into sole possession of second-place on the school's all-time list with 50 for his career, hit fifth-inning single moved him into fourth on the career chart with 215 hits, and his first-inning RBI tied him with Greg Carlson for 10th.

This weekend's series with Pacific opens on Friday (April 24) with a 2:30 p.m. first pitch at Dobbins Stadium. The scene then shifts to Stockton for the final two games of the series, with Saturday's second game beginning at 6 p.m., and Sunday's finale at 2 p.m., from Klein Family Field.
