Hirschkorn's Walk-Off Walk in the 10th Lifts UC Davis Past Pacific, 6-5

Score: UC Davis 6, Pacific 5 (10 innings)
Location: Davis, Calif. (Dobbins Stadium)
Records: UC Davis 16-18, Pacific 12-23

THE SHORT STORY: Houston Hirschkorn drew a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the 10th inning to score Tyler Howard and lift UC Davis to a 6-5 walk-off victory over Pacific on Tuesday night at Dobbins Stadium. Kai Mault finished 2-for-5 with two RBI to pace the Aggie offense, which battled back twice from multi-run deficits before Howard's speed and Hirschkorn's patience ended it in extras. Rowen Barnes worked a perfect 10th inning to earn the win and improve to 2-0 on the season.

LEADING OFF

  • Mault was the offensive catalyst, going 2-for-5 with two RBI while scoring once. Both of his hits came in critical moments, including a sixth-inning single through the right side that scored Everet Johnson to tie the game at five and force extra innings.
  • Elijah McNeal went 2-for-5 with an RBI, providing UC Davis with their first run of the game.
  • Keenan Anzai finished 2-for-4 with a walk and scored once
  • Howard in his abbreviated night, stole second after entering as a pinch runner, and eventually came home as the winning run.
  • Hirschkorn, used as a pinch hitter with two outs and the bases loaded in the 10th, worked a 3-1 count against Pacific's Liam Smith before drawing the game-winning walk on the fifth pitch of the at-bat.
  • Barnes closed the door in the 10th to help give way to the walk-off. Tyler Wood was effective through the middle innings, tossing two scoreless frames in the sixth and seventh while striking out three. Mason Lerma followed with two more scoreless innings before Barnes finished it off, with the trio combining to allow just four hits over the final five innings.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Pacific scored three times in the first two innings, capped by a Rylan Evans solo home run in the second.
  • UC Davis responded with three runs in the fourth, highlighted by a Mault RBI single and a Pacific throwing error, to take a 4-3 lead.
  • The Tigers reclaimed the advantage in the fifth on scoring a pair of runs, both on walks with the bases loaded to go ahead 5-4.
  • Mault tied it again in the sixth with a two-out RBI single through the right side. Neither team scored through the seventh, eighth or ninth. In the 10th, Howard stole second after entering as a pinch runner, Johnson reached with a bunt single, Castagnola sacrificed to make it second and third, and Joey Wright was intentionally walked, leading eventually to Hirschkorn drawing the walk-off walk to end it.
