April 12, 2015 IRVINE, Calif. - Senior goalkeeper Jillian Wilding posted 11 saves while defender Elsie Fullerton scored two goals, including the game-winner in the fourth, leading No. 11 UC Davis to a 6-5 upset of No. 5 UC Irvine in Big West Conference women's water polo action at Anteater Aquatics Complex Sunday afternoon.
The Aggies improve to 16-12 for the year and 2-3 in league play. The victory marks the program's first win against a national top five team since a 9-8 victory against No. 5 San Diego State at the 2008 NCAA Championship. It also snaps a streak of 23 losses to the Anteaters in series history, dating back to a 9-5 win at the 2004 Gaucho Invite.
Freshman Paige Virgil, sophomore Bryn Lutz and juniors Sammi Murphy and Ariel Arcidiacono also scored for UC Davis.
The Aggies fell behind by a 3-0 deficit during the first six minutes of play before freshman Greta Kohlmoos drew a five-meter penalty shot and Virgil converted to break the scoreless start. Murphy hit from the outside late in the second to keep UC Davis within two, then Arcidiacono scored on the free throw after getting fouled beyond the five-meter marker.
Lutz made it three straight goals with her power-play conversion to start the third, tying the contest at 4-4, then Fullerton extended the streak to four unanswered with her two-meter goal. Sophomore Destene Albers tied the contest at 5-5 with her outside shot late in the third.
UCI escaped an Aggie 6-on-5 chance to start the fourth but Fullerton later buried an outside shot for the only goal of the fourth quarter. UC Davis stopped two power plays down the stretch to complete its upset win.
The Aggies return home to host Sonoma State and Cal State Monterey Bay in a Picnic Day doubleheader on Saturday. Game times are 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., respectively.
