April 11, 2015 LONG BEACH, Calif. - No. 11 UC Davis never trailed throughout the entire contest until the last 29 seconds when freshman defender Alexandra Massier's goal lifted 12th-ranked Long Beach State to a 7-6 victory in Big West Conference women's water polo action at Lindgren Aquatics Center Saturday afternoon.
The Aggies fall to 15-12 for the year and 1-3 in conference games. The 49ers improve to 16-10 overall and even their Big West ledger to 1-1.
Senior Keelia Houston and junior Allyson Hansen each scored two goals for UC Davis, which led 2-1 through the first quarter, 4-2 at halftime, 6-3 early in the fourth quarter and 6-5 at the midpoint of the final frame. Sophomores Bryn Lutz and Hannah Harvey each added one.
For LBSU, Massier, junior Christina Kotsia and junior Kayla Robert each had two goals. Massier scored both of hers in that fourth quarter, equalizing at the 2:16 mark before netting the game-winner in the final minute.
Hansen put the Aggies on the board with her 6-on-5 goal in the first quarter. Kotsia evened up the contest on the next possession, then Houston restored the one-goal edge for UC Davis after the ensuing restart. The Aggies failed on five power-play opportunities in the second, managing their only goal when Hansen delivered with 4:15 to go -- once again, a direct response to a Beach score. Harvey connected with 13 seconds left before the half to extend UC Davis' lead to two at the break.
The Aggies held on to a one- or two-goal edge for the entire third quarter and into the fourth before Massier's back-to-back goals erased that advantage.
UC Davis takes on No. 5 UC Irvine on Sunday for its final Big West contest of the year. Game time is noon at Anteater Aquatic Center. UCI has a 25-1 conference record since the start of the 2011 season.
