March 8, 2015 DAVIS, Calif. - Freshman Greta Kohlmoos, sophomore Bryn Lutz and senior Keelia Houston each netted two goals while senior goalkeeper Jillian Wilding blocked three power-play attempts to lead 10th-ranked UC Davis to an 8-5 win over No. 14 Pacific in the finale of the 35th Aggie Shootout women's water polo tournament at Schaal Aquatics Center Sunday.
The Aggies improve to 11-9 for the year.
Kohlmoos hit natural goals in each of the first and second quarters to propel UC Davis to a 5-1 start. Lutz scored her first at the five-minute mark as part of her team's 5-0 run, then opened the fourth quarter with her second goal. Houston netted her goals in the second and third, the latter of which came on one of just two Aggie 6-on-5 chances.
Wilding's net protection kept the Tigers at bay throughout the second half. After surrendering Taylor Adair's extra-player goal in the opening minute, she protected the cage for the next 15 minutes while her teammates scored five unanswered. She finished the game with 12 total stops, even before the break.
Also scoring for UC Davis was freshman Paige Virgil, who put the Aggies on the board midway through the first; and sophomore Carla Tocchini, who answered the first of two Gracie Smith goals with her shot with 3:08 left in the game.
The Aggies finished 3-1 for the weekend, sweeping their three Shootout games against Cal State East Bay, No. 17 Wagner and No. 14 Pacific after Friday's Big West-opening setback against No. 17 UC Santa Barbara.
UC Davis continues its 11-day homestand with a Big West Conference matchup against Hawai'i on Friday. First sprint at Schaal Aquatics Center is 4 p.m.
