March 7, 2015 DAVIS, Calif. - Sophomore Bryn Lutz and junior Ariel Arcidiacono each totaled three goals to help No. 10 UC Davis sweep its first day of action at the 35th Aggie Shootout women's water polo tournament at Schaal Aquatics Center Saturday. The Aggies defeated Cal State East Bay, 13-4, then held on to finish a 5-4 victory against No. 17 Wagner.
Lutz scored two goals in the finale against Wagner while Arcidiacono had a hat trick in the afternoon game against the Pioneers.
UC Davis held a 3-1 halftime lead over the Seahawks, and stormed ahead by a 5-2 margin after third-quarter goals from Lutz and Elsie Fullerton. However, Elise Begg notched a 6-on-5 goal in the third and Jessica Burdge did likewise midway through the fourth to bring the deficit to just one tally. Lefty Megan Rodriguez fired a shot with 25 seconds left in a hope to force overtime, but the shot barred out and UC Davis took final possession.
Junior Allyson Hansen and freshman Paige Virgil also had goals in the first half as part of the Aggies' 3-0 start.
In Saturday's early matchup with former Western Water Polo Association leaguemate Cal State East Bay, Arcidiacono netted three goals while Hansen and Sammi Murphy each added two. The Aggies scored seven unanswered goals en route to an 8-1 halftime lead, then largely allowed reserves to see significant playing time in the second half in extending the margin to the 13-4 final.
Arcidiacono completed her entire hat trick in the span of about four minutes, finishing a 6-on-5 opportunity in the final seconds of the first quarter, scoring on a rebound and putback to start the second, then delivering on another power play at the 3:50 mark in the second. Murphy had both of her goals amidst that run, converting on back-to-back counterattacks in the second quarter.
Hansen, who scored the game's first goal out of two meters, hit her second after a 6-on-5 chance expired in the third.
Other UC Davis scorers were Lutz, Courtney Weddle, Hannah Harvey, Lauren Emge, Sammy Preston and Jill Bushman. Senior goalie Jillian Wilding had seven saves in her first half in front of the cage, then Haley Cameron and Olivia Husted posted two blocks in their stints in the third and fourth quarters, respectively.
The Aggie Shootout continues on Sunday with three games. UC Davis finishes the day with a contest against former Big West Conference rival Pacific at 3 p.m.
