DAVIS, Calif. - Junior Allyson Hansen netted two goals but UC Davis shot just 18 percent overall, falling 7-5 to UC Santa Barbara to begin Big West Conference women's water polo play on Schaal Aquatics Center Friday afternoon. Sophomores Carla Tocchini, Bryn Lutz and Hannah Harvey each hit one goal to account for the remaining Aggie scoring.

The 10th-ranked Aggies fall to 8-9 overall and 0-1 in league play, having lost six straight conference games dating back to the end of the 2013 season. The Gauchos, tied with Wagner for 17th in Wednesday's national polls, improve to 10-11 for the year and 1-0 in Big West games.

Freshman Camila Shafer led UCSB with five goals, including three in the third quarter.

After spotting a 6-on-5 goal by Sophia Trabucco, UC Davis answered back with a Hansen skip shot and a Tocchini lob to forge a 2-1 lead by the end of the first frame. Harvey, who had two steals in the opening quarter, break up an entry pass into two meters that almost certainly would have led to a Gaucho equalizer to start the second. Hansen then made it 3-1 with her counterattack goal at the midpoint of the second.

The Gauchos cut the deficit to 3-2 with Schafer's back-hander from two meters with 2:14 in the second, then equalized on a second-chance goal early in the third. Lutz scored on a 6-on-5 chance with five minutes left in the third to put UC Davis back on top, 4-3, only to see UCSB regain the lead with back-to-back Schafer goals -- the first of which came just 16 seconds after Lutz' go-ahead. Schafer then made it three unanswered when she hit a power-play goal from about five meters out as the third-quarter buzzer sounded.

Harvey brought the Aggies back to within a single tally with 5:04 remaining in the fourth, scoring on a putback after Keelia Houston had a 6-on-5 shot field blocked. However, as she had after Lutz' goal in the third, Schafer responded just seconds after the ensuing restart, putting UCSB back up by two.

The Aggies' half-court defense clamped down on the Gauchos the rest of the way, but the offense failed to connect despite three after-timeout plays in the last three minutes. UCSB clung to the 7-5 margin en route to the win, largely running in clock-management mode.

In all, UC Davis shot just 5-for-28 for the game.

Friday's game served as a precursor to the 35th-annual Aggie Shootout tournament, featuring UCSB, Cal State East Bay, Wagner, Pacific and Santa Clara. The Aggies on CSUEB at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, then finishes the day with first-time opponent Wagner at 6 p.m.
