Aggies rally, Highlanders pull away late

Box Score March 5, 2015

Box Score EDITOR'S NOTE: Seeds updated to reflect UC Davis currently as the No. 5 seed following Thursday night's game, not the No. 4 seed as previously posted (information as of 12:36 a.m. on March 6).

RIVERSIDE, Calif. -- Kelsey Harris and Alyson Doherty each finished with a team-high 17 points, but a jumper by Dynese Adams broke a 55-all tie and host UC Riverside scored six of the final eight points in the game, lifting the Highlanders to a 61-56 victory over the Aggies on Thursday night at the SRC Arena.

The loss was the fourth straight for UC Davis, which fell to 13-14 overall and 8-7 in Big West Conference play, dropping the Aggies into a three-way tie for fourth with UC Riverside and Long Beach State heading into Saturday's regular season finale at UC Irvine at 2 p.m. As of now, UC Davis currently stands as the No. 5 seed, as the Highlanders hold a half-game lead in the tiebreaker with a 2-1 record against both the Aggies (2-2 against the others) and 49ers (1-2 against the others) this season.

UCR, which has only that head-to-head meeting withLong Beach State in its regular season finale on Saturday, improved to 17-12 overall and 8-7 in league play, led by 24 points and eight rebounds from Annelise Ito.

Harris hit 6-of-10 from the floor -- including five three-pointers -- adding four rebounds and three assists to help lead the Aggies, scoring 12 of those in the second half on four three-pointers in 18 minutes. Doherty hit 7-of-11 from the field and shared team-high honors with seven rebounds, but picked up her fifth foul with 39 seconds to play.

UC Davis trailed by as many as eight points with just over 14 minutes remaining in the game, but clawed its way back into the contest, getting a basket inside by Rachel Nagel and a three-pointer from the corner by Harris to close to within three. Simone DeCoud answered with a basket at the other end, before Harris came back down the court and drained another three to make it a two-point game.

Ito and Sydnee Fipps traded baskets, and another by Ito pushed the Highlanders' lead to four at 48-44 with 6:40 remaining. The Aggies went to the Harris well one more time and came up golden as the senior buried another three-pointer to make it a one-point contest and Doherty hit 1-of-2 from the line to tie the game with just under six minutes to play.

One of the nation's scoring leaders, Brittany Crain, gave UCR the lead once again, and Ito vaulted the advantage back to four points with 4:19 to play, but UC Davis was undaunted, going down low to Doherty for an "and one," and taking the lead on another inside bucket by Doherty, making it 53-52 with 1:58 to go.

Akilah Martin quickly answered with a three-pointer at the other end, but Doherty capped a personal seven-point run to tie the game at 55 and set up the final tense moments. Adams' basket came with just under a minute to go, while DeCoud and Ito each hit a pair from the line to ice the game, holding the Aggies to just one field goal attempt in the final minute.

UC Davis shot 43 percent from the field to 40 percent for the Highlanders, and held a 39-32 advantage on the glass. UC Riverside's defense, however, forced the Aggies into 22 turnovers, scoring 16 points off those miscues.
