No. 2 Cardinal rides early lead to win over Aggies

March 29, 2015

STANFORD, Calif. - Senior Keelia Houston, junior Allyson Hansen and sophomore Carla Tocchini each scored goals in UC Davis' 14-3 loss to No. 2 Stanford in women's collegiate water polo action at Avery Aquatic Center Sunday afternoon.

The Aggies, ranked 11th nationally in Wednesday coaches' poll, move to 14-11 in their first competition since breaking for final exams.

Houston scored her goal in the first quarter after winning a loose ball in front of the Stanford cage, putting the Aggies on the board and halting a run of three unanswered for Stanford to start the contest. Hansen hit hers with 2:07 in the second to finish a counterattack. Tocchini buried an outside shot midway through the third, bringing the score to 9-3.

Stanford enjoyed hat tricks from sophomore Dani Jackovich and seniors Kiley Neushul and Ashley Grossman. Jackovich scored all three of her goals in the Cardinal's 5-1 start in the first, while Neushul and Grossman netted theirs in each of the first three quarters.

Junior Haley Cameron led the trio of UC Davis goalkeepers with four saves, all in the third frame. Senior Elsie Fullerton also had an Aggie highlight with her field block against the strong outside shot of Maggie Steffens near the end of the first half. The Cardinal held a 7-2 edge at the break.

Two Stanford players hit milestone goals in the contest. Neushul's goal in the third was her 200th, while Anna Yelizarova popped in a goal in the final seconds for her 100th. The Cardinal converted all three of its 6-on-5 chances but barred out on its lone five-meter penalty shot. The Aggies failed to convert any of their three power plays, even getting three shots off in the first such opportunity early in the third. Stanford goalie Gabby Stone made two of her 15 total saves on that possession.

UC Davis returns home to host CSUN in continued Big West Conference play on Saturday. First sprint is at noon.
