Nixon lifts No. 8 Wahine past Aggies in OT

March 13, 2015

DAVIS, Calif. - UC Davis sophomore Hannah Harvey scored three goals, including a go-ahead power-play conversion in overtime, but Hawai'i sophomore Claire Nixon netted two goals in the final minute of the extra time to lift the No. 8 Rainbow Wahine to a 10-9 victory over No. 11 UC Davis in a Big West Conference women's water polo thriller at Schaal Aquatics Center Friday afternoon.

The Aggies fall to 11-10 for the year, and drop to 0-2 in league play.

Freshman Greta Kohlmoos, freshman Paige Virgil and sophomore Bryn Lutz each finished with two goals on the day. Senior Jillian Wilding had six saves in front of the UC Davis cage.

For Hawai'i, sophomore Chloe Barr completed a hat trick while Caity Lopes da Silva matched Nixon's output of two goals. Sophomore goalie Sarah Logan protected the 'Bows net with nine saves.

Harvey's third goal came on a second chance with less than a minute left in the first overtime segment. Lutz had fired a skip shot from the 3 spot but the ball caromed off the cage and found itself in Harvey's hand just off the left post. Harvey immediately put the shot in for an 8-7 go-ahead with 0:43 left.

However, Wahine junior Paula Chillida Esforzado quickly answered with a goal on the other end, tying the contest at 8-8 with 0:13 before the overtime break. UC Davis regained the lead in the sixth period, drawing an exclusion and a five-meter foul in quick succession. Lutz hit the penalty shot to give the Aggies a 9-8 edge at the 2:15 mark. A Wilding steal on the other end gave the Aggies possession with 1:33 remaining.

UC Davis opted to run out a full shot clock, putting possession back to Hawai'i with about a minute remaining. Wahine head coach Maureen Cole called her lone overtime timeout, then Nixon -- who had not shot previously in the contest -- fired from about six meters out immediately upon the restart. The shot flew untouched into the Aggie net for the equalizer.

A Logan save on the UC Davis attacking end provided Hawai'i with one more possession. Nixon launched from roughly the same spot as before, with the same outcome: a goal into the upper corner for the game-winner.

Virgil had scored two goals in the second quarter, the second of which tied the contest at 4-4. She had a third goal taken off the board with 1:47 left in the fourth quarter. She had drawn a minor foul in transition right on the five-meter line, then quickly spun and fired a backhanded dart into the UH cage for what appeared to establish an 8-6 lead for the Aggies. However, Hawai'i protested the goal. After further review, it was determined that Virgil had shot on the whistle rather than after it. The ball was not yet live and the goal did not count.

Kohlmoos hit her two goals in the third, pulling UC Davis from a 6-4 deficit into a 6-6 tie. Both scores came as a result of the 5-foot-10 freshman winning battles at two meters upon entry passes from Lutz and Ariel Arcidiacono.

Friday's game kicks off a four-game weekend for the Aggies, who host Marist on Sunday, then Harvard and Fresno Pacific on Monday. Sunday's game against the Red Foxes begins at Noon.
