Feb. 8, 2015 LA JOLLA, Calif. - Junior Allyson Hansen and freshman Heather Johnson each scored three goals while freshman Paige Virgil added another two in leading 16th-ranked UC Davis to a 14-3 win over Santa Clara in the 11th-place game of the Triton Invitational women's water polo tournament at UC San Diego's Canyonview Aquatic Center Sunday.
The Aggies, who to 4-6 for the year, also fell in a 10-9 overtime thriller to No. 14 Michigan earlier in Sunday's action. Senior Keelia Houston tied her career high of four goals in that setback.
UC Davis never trailed in the victory over the Broncos, scoring 10 unanswered from late in the first quarter through the end of the third. Hansen and Houston each delivered on a 6-on-5 chances to put the Aggies out to the 2-0 start. After SCU junior Elle Surber converted a power-play opportunity of her own, Addie Green extended the UC Davis lead back to two with her five-meter penalty shot to close the first frame.
Green's goal ignited a 10-0 Aggie streak that ended with a Hailey Wright goal in the final seconds of the third. Virgil and Weddle combined for three 6-on-5 goals in the second quarter to set the halftime board at 6-1. Houston and Hansen stretched the lead to seven with their natural goals to start the third, then Hansen finished her hat trick with another goal at the 5:16 mark. Johnson, freshman Jill Bushman and Wright finished the six-goal quarter with even-strength tallies in the last two minutes.
Johnson added two goals in the fourth to complete her first collegiate hat trick.
In the day's earlier action, Houston scored four goals and Hansen chipped in two to aid in an Aggie comeback effort against the Wolverines. Michigan led 3-1 after the first quarter and 4-2 midway through the second. Houston netted her second goal with 1:03 left before halftime to close the gap to a single score, then Hansen tied things up at 4-4 to start the pivotal third. Nonetheless, the Wolverines reclaimed a two-goal lead, including a 7-5 edge at the three-minute mark in the third. Houston struck again with 1:48 remaining in the third while junior Ariel Arcidiacono -- making her 2015 return to action in her hometown -- tied the contest with a power-play goal in the final minute.
Hansen gave UC Davis its first lead of the game with her goal at the 4:14 mark in the fourth but Elizabeth Williams answered with the equalizer after the next restart. Sophomore Hannah Harvey again put the Aggies up by one with a goal at 3:22, only to have sophomore Bryce Beckwith respond with a goal with 1:49 left, tying the contest at 9-9. Neither team could muster a go-ahead for the remainder of regulation, forcing the overtime period.
Michigan sophomore Allison Skaggs logged the only goal of the extra frames with her goal in the first overtime segment.
UC Davis, playing in its third straight tournament, returns home for the Davis Challenge on Friday and Saturday. UC San Diego and Azusa Pacific will square off in the only Friday contest, then UC Davis will take on each of those two teams as part of Saturday's four-game slate.
