Feb. 21, 2015 IRVINE, Calif. -- Junior Ariel Arcidiacono scored a pair of goals while senior goalkeeper Jillian Wilding posted seven saves against 18 shots faced, helping 13th-ranked UC Davis compile a 7-4 victory over No. 14 Michigan to close out Day 1 of the UCI Invitational women's water polo tournament at Anteater Aquatic Complex Saturday.
The Aggies, which earlier lost to No. 4 California by a 10-2 final, move to 7-7 for the year.
Arcidiacono was one of six UC Davis scorers in the victory over the Wolverines. Paige Virgil, Greta Kohlmoos, Allyson Hansen, Elsie Fullerton and Hannah Harvey each added one tally, as the Aggies held a 2-0 lead through the first quarter and a 5-2 edge at halftime.
UC Davis started to an early 3-0 lead in the contest. Fullerton and Hansen delivered in the opening period then Virgil tacked on the team's third two minutes into the second. The Wolverines then answered with back-to-back goals from senior Elizabeth Williams and sophomore Allison Skaggs, cutting the deficit to just one.
Arcidiacono responded with her first goal after the ensuing restart, and Harvey connected on a 6-on-5 goal at the 2:21 mark to put the Aggies back up by three. Each team traded goals in the third and fourth frames, keeping UC Davis' final margin steady at three. U-M had three power-play opportunities in the final quarter but the Aggies fended off each one.
In the loss to the Golden Bears, sophomore Bryn Lutz hit a five-meter penalty shot and junior Courtney Weddle added a goal to account for the total Aggie scoring. Anna Illes and Dora Antal, both veterans of Hungary's national team, led Cal with three goals apiece.
Cal held a 6-1 lead at halftime then added three unanswered late in the third after UC Davis managed to defend against a pair of power plays. Weddle scored her goal to start the fourth quarter but the Aggies could not convert two additional 6-on-5 chances that would have cut into the Cal margin. Genevieve Weed ended a long scoreless drought by both teams with her player-up goal in the final minute.
UC Davis picks up action on Sunday against No. 8 San Jose State at 9:15 a.m. The Aggies will then face either Loyola Marymount or San Diego State in a placing game. Both Day 2 contests will take place at Corona Del Mar High School.
