Lynch powers Aggies in tie at Texas State

Box Score Feb. 15, 2015

Box Score

SAN MARCOS, Texas -- Senior Nick Lynch finished 3-for-3 with two runs scored and UC Davis had numerous chances to win fall by the wayside, as late rallies by host Texas State kept the game alive long enough to forge a 7-7 tie that ended after 10 innings due to the Aggies' travel curfew on Sunday afternoon at Bobcat Ballpark.

UC Davis remained unbeaten on the year at 2-0-1, while recording the program's first tie in the Division I era and the first since the 2004 season when the Aggies and Cal State San Bernardino tied, 10-10, on April 18. The Bobcats moved to 0-2-1 with the draw.

Four errors in the game by UC Davis -- including one in the 10th that allowed the tying run to score -- thwarted the Aggies, who rebounded from a 1-0 deficit with a four-run fourth to take the lead and then scored twice in the ninth and again in the 10th to put Texas State's backs against the wall late.

Senior right-hander Raul Jacobson allowed just one earned on six hits while striking out five in seven innings of work in his first start of the season. Bobcats' starter Cory Geisler, who himself had to work through three miscues by his defense behind him, allowed four unearned runs on four hits with five strikeouts over 5 1/3 innings of work.

The two teams combined to strand 20 runners on base -- 14 of those by UC Davis -- including 11 in scoring position by the Aggies, but it was Texas State which broke onto the scoreboard first with a run in the third, scoring with two outs on an error by a ball hit by Cedric Vallieres that allowed Luke Sherley to score and make it 1-0.

That's when the Aggies rallied for their big inning, scoring four times on two hits and taking advantage of two Bobcat errors in the fourth. With Lynch on third (walk) and Austin March (infield single) on second with one out, an error by the shortstop on a ball hit by Ryan Anderson allowed Lynch to score and tie the game. After a strikeout and an Anderson steal, an error by the left fielder allowed two more runs to come home, and senior Kevin Barker followed with a double to gap in right centerfield -- the first of six doubles for UC Davis on the day -- for a 4-1 advantage.

Texas State rebounded and got two of the runs back in its half of the inning, scoring twice on a two-out throwing error to make it 4-3 and, then, tying the game on a sac fly by Derek Scheible in the sixth and taking the lead on a home run by Vallieres in the seventh for the 5-4 advantage.

Down to their last at-bats, the Aggies found a way to rally for the tying and go-ahead runs in the ninth as Lynch singled and stole second with two outs, crossing the plate to tie the game when Mason Novak followed by sending the first pitch he saw into the gap in left center for a double. After a pitching change, Cameron Olson followed with a double of his own down the left field line, scoring Novak for a 6-5 lead.

With the Bobcats now down to their final three outs, Jaylen Hubbard greeted reliever Nat Hamby with a lead-off single, prompting Head Coach Matt Vaughn to go to his closer, Zach Stone, for the third consecutive day. Texas State, however, clawed its way back into the game, as Tanner Hill sacrificed Hubbard into scoring position, eventually scoring two batters later on a two-out RBI single by Cody Lovejoy to make it 6-6.

Barker got another rally started for the Aggies in the 10th, hit by a pitch with one out and stealing second for Tino Lipson, whose ground ball to the right side moved him 90 feet away. With Tanner Bily at the plate, a pitch in the dirt got away from the catcher, allowing Barker to come home on the wild pitch for a 7-6 lead. The Aggies had a chance to tack on more, loading the bases on a walk to Bily, and hit by pitches against both Lynch and March, but reliever Andrew Boes came on to strikeout Novak to end the threat.

A lead-off single by Matt Sanchez welcomed Aggie reliever Blake Peters to the game and a ground ball moved him into scoring position with one out. Granger Studdard strode to the plate and sent another ground ball to the left side, but a throwing error allowed Sanchez to round third and score to tie the game once again. Peters worked out of the jam with a fly ball and a strikeout to finish, what would end up being, the final inning.

Six different UC Davis players finished with hits, including March, who finished 2-for-5, to join Lynch with a multi-hit game. Hubbard and Lovejoy each had two hits for Texas State.

The Aggies look to keep rolling in their home opener on Tuesday (Feb. 17) at 2 p.m., welcoming Santa Clara to Dobbins Stadium. The Broncos lost 2-of-3 at No. 1 Vanderbilt over the weekend, taking home a 7-6 win in game two of the series on Saturday.
