Feb. 1, 2015 STANFORD, Calif. - Sophomore Carla Tocchini and junior Allyson Hansen each scored three goals to lift No. 18 UC Davis to a 9-5 upset of No. 13 Indiana, securing a Day 2 split at the Stanford Invitational women's water polo tournament at Avery Aquatic Center Sunday. The Aggies fell to sixth-ranked Big West Conference rival UC Irvine by a 13-6 final early in the morning.
UC Davis moves to 2-4 for the year.
Tocchini converted a 6-on-5 chance in the first quarter, added a natural goal in the second, then netted the game's final tally with two minutes left in the contest for her hat trick. Hansen's scoring all occurred within a four-minute span in the second half. The first broke a 4-4 tie with 2:05 remaining in the third. She converted a power play in the final second on that frame, then hit her third goal to maintain a two-goal lead early in the fourth.
Save for a 1-0 start for the Hoosiers, UC Davis never trailed in the contest. Rebecca Gerrity scored midway through the third to tie the game at 4-4, only to have Hansen's outburst pull the Aggies out front.
Bryn Lutz, Keelia Houston and Hannah Harvey each scored goals in the win over Indiana.
In Sunday's opener, Harvey and Houston each scored twice but the Aggies surrendered six UCI goals in the second quarter to see a 3-3 first-quarter tie into a 9-4 halftime deficit.
Tocchini, freshman Greta Kohlmoos and Hansen each netted goals in a three-minute span late in the first to recover from a 2-0 hole. However, U.S. National Team veteran Danielle Warde led the Anteater charge with two of her team's six goals in that pivotal second.
Harvey hit goals in each of the third and fourth quarters but UC Davis could not close the gap to fewer than six after the break.
The Aggies return to action at UC San Diego's Triton Invitaitonal on February 7-8.
