SEATTLE - Of freshman guard Siler Schneider's season/career-high 13 points, none were bigger than his three-point basket, hit with 37 seconds in regulation to force overtime in Monday night's non-conference game at KeyArena. In OT, UC Davis puled within two at 77-75 when Darius Graham scored the final three of his 12 points with 44.6 seconds left in the extra period, but Seattle was able to score the last three points of the game to record an 80-75 victory over the Aggies.
UC Davis will now face Boise State Wednesday night with a 4-7 overall record; Seattle will continue its season with a 6-7 mark.
Josh Fox led all Aggies with 18 points and was one of four players to post double-figure point totals for UC Davis. In addition to the senior forward, Graham and Schneider, Brynton Lemar added another 10.
UC Davis' defense forced Seattle to commit 21 turnovers, the most by any opponent this season, which turned into 20 points for the Aggies.
Neal Monson ended his evening with a game-high nine rebounds and was responsible for seven of his team's 19 boards on the defensive end.
"On the road, we gave ourselves an opportunity to win the game," said UC Davis head coach Jim Les. "Sometimes you need to suffer some tough losses like this to learn how to win, and what to do to win.
"You can't fault the effort, everyone who played contributed. It was there for the taking."
Sixteen lead changes and five tied scores took place before Schneider's game-tying basket, one that took place thanks to Graham who drove towards the hoop and drew a second defender, which left his teammate open in the far corner. Without hesitation, Schneider pulled up and drained a three to tie the game.
A heads-up play by Fox on the subsequent possession gave UC Davis a chance to score the game-winner as well.
With just a few seconds separating the shot and game clocks, Seattle set up its offense for the final possession of the game. That never took place thanks to the junior forward who slid off his defender near the far elbow, and forced a jump-ball situation. With the arrow pointing in its favor, it was UC Davis, not Seattle, that had a chance to milk the clock to create a game-winning look.
Unfortunately for the Aggies, they were unable to break that 68-68 tie, but forced another five minutes of action thanks to Schneider who stepped up in a key situation.
"Even though he is a freshman, he sure does not play like one," said Les.
After Fox scored the first points in overtime, Seattle's Jack Crook scored five unanswered before picking up his fifth foul.
A free throw from Garrison Goode was followed by two free throws from the Redhawks' William Powell, which bumped SU's cushion to a two-possession margin. Another free throw, this time from Fox, pulled UC Davis within three until Powell's bucket pushed Seattle's lead to five with 55 seconds remaining.
On UC Davis' subsequent possession, three Seattle players circled Fox, who received the ball in the middle of the key from Graham. Instead of trying to force an attempt in the paint, he wisely threw the ball back out to a wide open Graham, who nailed his third trey of the night to chop the Redhawks' advantage down to two.
Following Malik Montoya's baseline basket, which doubled his team's lead, the Aggies missed from three and were forced to foul.
Brendan Westendorf connected on one of his two free throw attempts to push SU's lead to the game's final margin.
Seattle's Manroop Clair led all players with 19 points, on six threes and a free throw, and like the Aggies, was one of four players to score double digits. Powell finished with 17 points, Westendorf and Montoya chipped in 14 and 11 respectively.
