SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Facing a barrage of 18 shots on the night, the UC Davis defense was up to the task in a difficult environment on the road, limiting host No. 20 Cal Poly to just three shots on goal and fighting through 110 minutes en route to a scoreless draw on Wednesday night in front of 1,459 fans at Spanos Stadium in San Luis Obispo, Calif.
The Aggies moved to 7-8-3 overall and 3-3-3 in Big West Conference play, picking up a crucial point and moving two points clear of rival Sacramento State for the final conference tournament berth out of the North Division. The Hornets fell to UC Santa Barbara, 2-1, on Wednesday as the Gauchos moved ahead of the Mustangs (9-3-5, 4-1-4) by three points in the race for the division title.
UC Santa Barbara travels to UC Davis, while Sacramento State hosts Cal Poly, in the regular season finales on Oct. 31 at 2 p.m. from their respective sites. The Aggies, who can finish no better than third in the North Division, need a win or a tie against the Gauchos, coupled with a loss or tie by the Hornets to clinch the berth.
A loss against UCSB advances UC Davis only if Sacramento State loses or draws against the Mustangs, and the Hornets hold the head-to-head tiebreaker with the Aggies in the case of a UC Davis loss or draw and Sacramento State win.
Junior goalkeeper Armando Quezada finished with three saves to post his first shutout of the season and the third of the year overall for the Aggies, who were held to just three shots overall for the match -- two of those by freshman Justin Wright -- despite entering the night leading the Big West with 259 shots on the year.
UC Davis had three corner kicks in regulation -- two of those before the Aggies were credited with their first shot of the contest by freshman Kristian Heptner in the 64th minute. Wright then had another attempt turned away by Hamilton with just under 21 minutes to play in regulation as the two teams headed to overtime.
Wright tested Hamilton early in the first extra period to no avail before the defense stiffened. UC Davis got some help from the crossbar on a shot taken by Chase Minter with 6:41 to play in the first overtime, then withstood six corner kicks and a 7-0 shot advantage by Cal Poly in the second overtime as Quezada made two of his three stops on shots by Minter and Matt LaGrassa in the first minute of that second extra period to keep the clean sheet intact.
Wednesday night marked the seventh overtime contest of the year for the Aggies, who moved to 2-2-3 overall in such matches in 2015.
LaGrassa and Justin Dhillon led all players with four shots apiece on the night for the Mustangs.
