DAVIS, Calif. -- Seniors Trevor Halsted and Erika Barr each finished third in their respective races, helping left the UC Davis men's and women's cross country teams to a second- and four-place finish, respectively, on Saturday morning at the 2015 NCAA Pre-National Meet in Louisville, Ky.
On the men's side, the Aggies placed four runners in the top 50 among a field of 207 runners, trailing champion Liberty by just 13 points and edging out third-place Brown by 26 points. The women placed three in the top 50 among a field of 237, finishing behind team champion Washington State (176), Buffalo (183), and Arizona (203).
Halsted ran a season-best 8K time of 24:07.6 to finish just eight seconds off the pace of individual champion Robert Allen of UMass-Lowell (23:59.9). It was his second top-five finish of the season after finishing second at the Aggie Open, and his third in the top 15 following an 11th-place finish at the UC Riverside Invitational back on Sept. 12, when he set his previous 8K season best of 24:38.6.
Barr, meanwhile, posted her fourth top-20 finish of the year and her third top-10 of the season, running a collegiate 6K best time of 20:51.9, six seconds faster than her previous best of 20:57.7 set earlier this year at UCR. Furman's Allie Buchalski won the women's race with a time of 20:17.3.
Seniors Nick Ratto and Jordon Rushing, who finished 34th and 39th respectively, joined teammate Amar Dholakia in the top 50. Ratto, whose previous best finish this season was 49th at the Stanford Invitational, bested his season-best time by just over a second with a 24:48.4 on Saturday -- missing his collegiate best by four-tenths, while Rushing's time of 24:49.9 shattered his previous best of 25:25.5 set in Riverside. Dholakia finished right behind Rushing in 41st, less than a second back at 24:50.6, while senior Cody Nguyen rounded out the scoring group in 55th with a time of 25:04.3.
Senior Patrick Fitzgerald -- the only Aggie to run in all five meets thus far this season -- finished 57th with a collegiate-best 8K time of 25:05.2, while freshman Jordy Ceja, who made his debut at the Capital Cross Challenge two weeks ago in Sacramento, crossed in a time of 25:42.0.
On the women's side, senior Katie Fry narrowly missed the top 25, but set a season-best 6K time of 21:26.8 to finish 26th overall, besting her time set at UC Riverside (21:39.4). Senior Christine Hoffmann, who missed the Stanford Invitational due to illness and hadn't raced since the UCR Invitational more than a month ago, finished 44th in her return to the course, crossing in a time of 21:43.7.
Juniors Nicole Lane (22:03.7) and Rianna Goins (22:15.8) rounded out the scoring group for the Aggies, finishing 73rd and 93rd, respectively, while junior Clara MacLeod (22:22.3) and freshman Muna Alhamad (22:42.3) closed out the day for UC Davis.
A little more local, at the Santa Clara Bronco Invitational in Sunnyvale, Calif., junior Luke Dorman led a trio of Aggies in the men's 8K invitational, crossing the line in a time of 25:59.3, pacing teammates Oliver Abundez-Dominguez (26:06.4) and Jonathan Summer (27:28.1).
On the women's side, freshman Natalie Cooper led a contingent of five Aggies in the women's 6K invitational, finishing with a time of 22:35.2 in only her third race of the season -- and her first at the 6K distance. She was followed by the scoring group of sophomore Jordan Mullins (23:17.7), freshman Molly Rinefort (23:36.1), sophomore Elizabeth Greif (23:37.3), and freshman Lorena Mendoza (23:43.3)
